Sterilizing Vermiculate
    #1615621 - 06/06/03 10:12 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Hello I use the pf tek method initially to create colonized substrate jars, after that I use a large plastic container and put a half inch layer of vermiculate down. Then I put down my colonized substrate and a small layer of vermiculate over this.

This is obviously a very common thing but I am think possibly a source of contaminants is the vermiculate that I just throw down in the fruiting environment.

Its basically right out of the bag which is relatively sterile.

Without adding things which may hinder the colonized mushrooms production is there a way I can sterilize this before I lay it down.

I was think using a pressure cooker but it seems like a hard way to do it since I use so much vermiculate at a time.

THANKS

Jonathan

nuke it for 5 min, stir, nuke for another 5 min.

It doesn't completely need it, verm is non-nutritive and shouldn't contam but it happens so it's best not to chance it.

Um I guess I should go get a microwave then. I'm the only one in the world who doesn't have one.

Any other ways other than use a microwave?

Yes, he was referring to the microwave.
Other options could be the oven or even boiling it for 1 hour every day for several days inside a container (fractional sterilization - see faqs).

why do I have to boil it everyday? Isn't once enough if I put it in a sterile container after?

I?ve tried boiling and microwaving.... in the micro I do it a couple of times for about 5min at a time inside of a microwave safe dish that has a vented lid. But boiling i?ll do once inside of a pillow case in my pc for and hour and a half @ 15psi. This I have found anyway to be plenty of sterilizing.IMHO

Here is a pic of a sucsesful microwave streilized coco/verm casing using this TEK..... http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23536

you don't need fractional for just brf....steaming for 1 hour does the trick .....fractional is for whole grains like rye, wbs, popcorn etc

the easiest way is to put the verm on a cookie sheet and leave it in the oven at 300F for 30 mins (easy to remember; 300 for 30) and it works.
