Growing in closet.
    #16155192 - 04/29/12 12:21 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

So I'm using the PF Tek growing method and the only place in my house where I can keep the cakes shut off from the outside light (for its twelve hour nap)is in my closet. But, the cakes have started to get this blueish coloration to them, and some parts of the cake are getting fuzzy. They aren't contams I know that but, are there any tips to help me out with. I birthed, dunked, and rolled the cakes a week ago and they still aren't producing pins.

Pictures could help.  The bluish color can come from the dunk.  The fuzz is just a little extra growth.  Just give it some time and it should pin.

Your cakes don't appreciate being shoved in a closet with stagnant air. FAE + evaporating water on the surface of your sub are the key pinning triggers.

Did you let your cakes consolidate for a week after they hit the visible 100% colonization on the outside? Do you fan and mist your SGFC every day? The cakes might already be drying out again and causing the bruising. Roughly handling your cakes can cause this as well.

Is the cake getting fuzzy or is there mycelium stretching out that looks kind of like little blades of grass?

Personally I'd leave my cakes sitting near a cracked window even if they are getting light rather than put them in a closet where they can't breathe.

I have never been too concerned with too much light, as long as there is a dark period at some point you should be fine, it's not like MJ where a disrupted light cycle will effect growth.

FAE is far more important, focus on that.

I'll throw one more thing out there though. Cubensis (not sure if all mushrooms) do the majority of their growing at night. So as ego said it's definitely a good idea to give them some time in the dark every day but not if it's potentially hurting the cause by putting them in a closet.

You'll get it all figured out and I'm sure you'll have a great grow.

ill just add im my experience with the colset
its always worked fine for me

i only ever ran into one problem
that was leaving the jars on the bottom
the heavier co2 seemed to make them stall out
so i moved them up to the top shelf and they loved it
started back up the next day and finished real quick

I have and still do most growing in closets, but my doors are always wide open unless somone stops by.
for me its a matter of paranoia and stealth but I notice no difference from weight, potency or general appearance of health or elongated stems when I fruited on a table in an unused room.

Trays/substrates should be kept 8-12" above the floor in all situations, the levels of potential contams (molds, other spores, bacteria etc) are far higher at ground level than if slightly elevated.

But the point about higher O2 levels at the top of the closet stands and seems to make sense.

I grow outside, in the shade ... temps. between 60 and 80F and a constant breeze of 70% humidity  ... in monotubs so I can control the drying that comes from lots of FAE ..

I do agree with bishlap.

when I didn't have these conditions, I grew, almost exclusively, in closets,  Keep the door open when you can .. have a little fan on a timer aimed at a wall so the air will move around ... get your FC up high on a shelf ...  and have fun.

You'll be cool.

Thanks guys, I took all of your suggestions in and started to fan more and mist less. I really do care about whether they are happy or not, and I am happy to say that for my first time pins started to pop up. Then more, then more...Will post pictures soon, and HOLY FUCK they've sprouted alot. I have one cake with about 35 pins growing up fast, and more coming. Thanks for all the help guys this "noobie" really apreciates it, again, I will post pics soon.
