Guessing Humidity (Not your usual how to raise humidity question)
    #16154112 - 04/29/12 02:46 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hey everyone SWIM has finished soaking his cakes in water for 24 hours and then rolling in dry verm all of which went just fine.

SWIM's fruiting chamber is a see through plastic box with holes drilled in all sides and of course perlite around 3-5" at the bottom with the cakes sitting on a clean strip of foil to keep out of contact with the perlite.

My real question is SWIM have no access to money to buy a analogue hydrometer for around another week and would like to know if there is a way of guessing the humidity or any ways of telling roughly the humidity as I have read some where people saying they know just but the build up of water inside but SWIM has also read lots saying this is condensation due to hot air meeting cold air which of course makes sense.

So if anyone has any little tips of tricks to use and help tell the humidity SWIM is all ears and eagerly awaiting your opinions etc

P.S SWIM knows this is easy to do not 100% accurate but even a rough method would do just for now

If you have water droplets inside the chamber, and you cakes are moist, and stay moist hours after misting, then the humidity might be OK.

There will never be droplets of water(condensation) on the sides or roof of a properly constructed shotgun terrarium.

To the original poster, make sure the terrarium is elevated on blocks so air can enter the holes in the bottom and that no fans are blowing in the room.  If so, you don't need to 'guess' humidity because it will be correct for mushroom growing.

Save your $8.  Any so-called 'hygrometer' you buy these days is made in china and only designed to separate you from your money-they don't work.

Thanks for the tips and advice I was only using hygrometer because its a word I've seen attached to devices which read humidity and thus thought was the commonly used name to describe a device that reads humidity.

When I do get round to buying one I was more going to look for an analogue one made in Britain and also expected to spend a bit more then $8/£4 but thanks for the heads up anyway's

I'm not sure if the UK is in love with chinese crap or not, but I had to get a friend in Germany to order a hygrometer for me from Amazon.DE and then send it here.  You might need to do the same.

Yea we have the same low quality goods shipped in from all the cheap arse factories. I imagine most western countries now have this problem and it is a real shame. In the UK we used to produce a lot of great stuff such as tools and a whole range of products but now the odd plastic moulding factory or car part places are about but other then that the same old shit lol

I had a touch of luck and managed to order an analogue humidity dial from eBay (thinking it was going to be a cheap one from China etc) only to find out it is made in Britain and actually a product from a major gardening store so all in all I had a great touch of luck paying only £2.99 . (costs £19.99 from garden store and is exact same model)

I guess life is like that sometimes you have touches of luck and sometimes you don't

I got a hygrometer for about 30 bucks from a cigar store.

When I went to calibrate it I discovered it was made of chrome-look painted plastic, paper, and a tiny and mysterious apparatus that I can`t imagine cost more than fifty cents to manufacture, which `calibrated` by being only loosely attached to the paper dialface.

Initially I thought the saleswoman was a bad businesswoman because she tried to discourage me from buying the item.  Now I realize she was only trying to help me out.

This is the one to get from what I understand: http://www.humidorhabana.com/product46.html

"Polytherm Hygrometer"

This is a german made hygrometer with a different system for measuring humidity that is very responsive and accurate.

Quote:

This is one solid beauty of a unit. The paperwork that comes with this even says this unit can be used in a laboratory or commercial premises. Simple and clean looking. It works differently than the other hygrometers via a special pretreated fiber unlike other analog hygrometers. As a result, this hygrometer gives a more precise reading and has higher sensitivity. Regarding the name "Polytherm", go figure. Maybe thought up by some engineering dude hallucinating on some potent German brewskis!

Color: Gold rim, white face, black print and dial.
Size: 2.625 in. diameter by 0.75 in. thick.
Construction: Plastic body and face.
Accuracy: Plus/minus 2% in the range of 25 to 100% relative humidity.
Method of Attachment: Velcro.
Other features: Adjustable dial.
