This is the lid method I used: http://www.shroomery.org/9030/Docs-Wild-Bird-Seed-Tek
I made a glovebox and used 1/4 bottle of 70% iso alcohol and rubbed that all over the box and everything around me... literally wore a paint suit made of tyvek and used a dust mask. Also had rubber gloves on. When i went to inoc the jars the cotton ball blocked my needle from poking into the jar. Its a hard way of finding out that cotton balls DONT WORK with this method! So I tore the cotton ball out of 4 jars and then inoc and on the other 4 jars I took the lid off and carefully squirted 0.5cc -1cc LC into each jar.

The red stuff is RTV SILICONE which makes a "SELF HEALING" lid. I am using that lid method next time! Also you use tyvek for the gas exchange port. Here is the link to amazons RTV SILICONE: http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-F81160-Hi-Temp-Silicone--3-Ounce/dp/B0002UEN1A/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1335746922&sr=8-2
Also here is the link on instructions on how to make this type of lid: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10628004#10628004

Cotton is not a good filter, that's why we use synthetic poly fil. Cotton is nutritious. If all you have is poly fil, tyvek and pore tape, make a lid like you see in my second pic. Works fine. I drilled a 3/8" hole for ge, stuffed with polyfil. I drilled a 1/4" hole for injection. I took a piece of tyvek slightly bigger than my hole, and pore taped it on, with two layers. After injection, reapply 2 layers of tape. I also tightened my lid down onto tyvek as well, but I'm not sure that's necessary. I know it doesn't hurt tho.

Auctually, I did lol. I looked at them tonight and I'm not 100% positive but it looks like there is fresh mycelien growth along the jar. Maybe shaking them helped???

I shook it really really good in between each jar. I'm thinking the jars either stalled, are slow growing, or the white is some cobweb contam.

The more the myc was distributed evenly from the shake will really help. Yeah once they recover after that shake and they are gonna take off.
17 days is no big deal and starting from spores and not an LC its really not surprising. Myc grows exponentially. They will look great in a week and probably be ready to get transferred to some substrate in two.

That's an outdated and poor "TEK" you're following, OP.
"Shake: Once you inoculate all of the jars, take and shake each one vigorously to distribute the spores throughout the WBS "
Bad advice. Also, coffee filters and usps tyvek envelopes are crappy material for GE filters.

I'm gonna second the coffee filter thing. When I started, I read the coffee filter thing and used it for awhile, til I realized it was a major factor in my failures. Coffee filters = suck.

Using a coffee filter for GE? Sounds like you might as well be using a slice of bread.

Well to be clear, I'm not sure the coffee filters are meant for ge. When I used them, per some dumb tek I saw, there was a polyfil ge filter, and coffee filter was placed over lids before tin foil an pc'd. Coffee filters remained on. I'm pretty sure all it ever served me was to wick moisture up the coffee filter and onto my ge filter.

Theres no coffee filter on my jars. Only USPS tyvek with a hole in it from the needle lol. So how often should the jars be shaken and whats a good grain prep to follow?

tyvek with hole? did you cover it with pore tape after knock up? be specific.
Grain prep.. rinse grains till semi clear ( 3 rinses for rye? ) soak 20 ish hours with gypsum. Rinse? bring to boil for a couple minutes then pour to strainer and steam dry for like 10 minutes til dry. PC 1.5 hours or more.

What do you think of my jars now? How many % of the jars do you think are colonized.
