I have logged in this once so that I can set the "last seen" feature up.  let the faggots flow forth into OTD and have it.  Its funny how they all grew nuts after I left.  I'm not here, I'm not reading, but I urge you all to keep melting down over me.  I know, I hurt alot of people, and they deserved it.  epic win for me, epic fail for you.

ythan, you rock dude.  i feel that my time at the shroomery was very positive and enjoyable, but this site is no longer for me. im not mad or upset or disappointed, i just want no part in a pg rated faggot festival.

A cool thing I read (it was in a Grateful Dead biography called Sweet Chaos: the Grateful Dead's American Adventure) was that all the members of the Dead, especially Jerry, looked up to the Beats, but Pigpen was a true beat. In a way, they all wanted to be beats (and I don't mean this in a "wannabe" way), but Pigpen really was one.

Why do you consider Pigpen a true beat?

I think that pig was unique, he didn't fit in with the beat's or the acid heads.

Love that pic Learyfan: I had a great version of lovelight where Janis came out and sang it with Pigpen, for like 30 or so minutes.

Learyfan-That's not my opinion, it was just something I read once. I don't know why they made that claim, but I just thought it was an interesting statement. Cool pic.

When I think of the beats I think of revolutionary poets and philosophers. I don't know much about Pigpen, but he doesn't seem to fall into the beatnik classification with guys like Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs or even Neal Cassady.

"When I think of the beats I think of revolutionary poets and philosophers. I don't know much about Pigpen, but he doesn't seem to fall into the beatnik classification with guys like Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs or even Neal Cassady. "

I know what you're saying, but not all beats were poets and philosophers. Neal Cassady, for example, wasn't a poet, though his letter-writing style did inspire Kerouac and he did ask Kerouac to teach him to write fiction. He was more of an energetic, interesting guy who could talk (and drive) for hours on end. A lot of the beat way was just doing simple things and finding joy in them-seeing beauty in everyday life and everyday people. I've read On the Road and Dharma Bums (both by Jack Kerouac), and a major theme in both novels is an appreciation of everyday life. Simple things like having a good meal or talking to someone after hitching a ride are almost glorified. There's a focus on travelling and doing what makes you happy-being in the moment.

Anyhow, I don't know enough about Pigpen's personality or his life to really make a judgment about whether or not he qualifies as a beat or not. Just mentioning the words of another. Perhaps that section of the book wasn't really accurate or something.

I believe he died at 26 years old. Not much time to even be classified as anything other than a member of the Dead!

yeah, too young. One more reason I stay away from the booze and stick with the Psychedelics. Pigpen was a hell of a loss, man. I always love the Dead, but I have a special apreciation for pigpen-era Grateful Dead. Those early years with him have been my favorite ever since I got into the Dead.

That is the worst Dead book of all time, the writer tried alot of things in it and none of them works. Read Dennis McNally's book if you want a good history of the Dead.

He lived life with a bottle of Southern Comfort working out blues tunes, writing and making music, he lived out alot of the same aspects that gave people before him the name Beat.
