Help connecting pc fan to power..

I don't know much about wiring, so I was hoping for some help.
I've got a tiny 12v cooling fan (the 1.5"x1.5" fan that sits on top of the processor heatsink) that needs to be connected to power somehow. I'm pretty sure that the fan runs off of AC power, and battery power is DC, so batteries aren't an option (?).
I found the following, but I was hoping for some clarity:
Quote:
If your using one of the power supplies coming from the computer power supply unit, then strip a bit of the end of the wires on the fan, then put one of those wires into the yellow bit , and then the other into the red bit, that will make it run at 12v. If you want to run it at 7v, you put one into the black bit, then on into the yellow bit ( I think, if not try the red). The just use some electrical tape or somit to keep it there.
I would rather not use the power supply from the old pc. I have a cell phone charger that I could splice the wires with, but I don't know if it will work.
Any suggestions? By the way, the three wires coming off of the fan are red, black and white.

HOW? Please read my question! There are three wires, red black and white. How the hell do I hook it up to a battery?

Ok, I tried connecting every combination of wires to the battery on both poles, and nothing happens. The fan plugged in to the motherboard, so I think the red wire may be a on/off switch type thing.
what do I do?

splice into the power from one of the other fans, also your motherbroad might have a connection on it for another fan.you might need a manaul for that.

Ok, maybe I'm not clear enough.
I have completely removed the fan from the PC. It's going to be RE-located. Nowhere near the PC powersupply. I need to figure out a way to plug the damn thing directly into the wall or into a battery somehow.
Is there any way to do this. The fan is described above.. 12v, processer cooling fan, 1.5"x1.5"x.5".. It's TINY. There has to be a way to get power into the damn thing.

red= 7-12vdc Black= Ground Yellow=System hardware monitoring / so not in use wire enough batteries in series not parallel example use of AA batteries = 1.5 volts = 8 batteries for example you can use other batteries just do the math and wire in series Ok is this clear enough for you ?

first off, nice, accurate, and simple diagram fallen
and just a clarification, to my knowledge, AAA thru D (and possibly more) batteries are all 1.5 volts. this might seem a tad anal to some, but i wanted to make this clear, so that you wont be forced to buy new batteries, nor believe the size of batteries to be the cause of it not working. good luck and let me know how it works for you, i have a 4x4(?) power supply could someday serve a use.

Dude, don't use batteries, all you have to do is find one of those 12vDC box type things you plug in the wall for variuos uses. Don't fuck with batteries that will just run out.

Thanks fallen, I appreciate it. I was tryin to run it off of one battery, lol!
Alright, if I were to remove the power supply and move it along with the fan, can I follow the information that I found in my first post?
That way I don't have to wire an assload of batteries.
Dys - thanks for that info, I didn't have enuff AA, just AAA's.

Good point dysphoria 8 aaa will last little while 8 D's will last a lot longer I did try this and it worked I had the same fan 3 pin black red yellow this did not work until the seventh battery was connected so I drew that fancy diagram up I even went to 14 batteries all I had still ran and also hooked up a cordless screw driver battery to it was 12 volts also worked if you have a 9v square battery that will probably work but then I would wire in parallel and use a few of them to make them last longer Five 9volts in parallel will still be 9 volts

You could also purchase a 12volt AC-DC power adapter, cut the lead off the end and wire it directly to the wall and just skip the batteries. You'd wire it just like the above diagram with the positive and negative wires from where you clipped the lead off.
Please note: the above link is selectable voltage from 3 to 12 volts (3,4,5,6,9 and 12 volt). I pisked it just so you know that adapters like this one exist. Selecting a lower voltage setting might allow you to control air flow to a small extent. A straight 12volt adapter should cost slightly less.
Also note: I do not support Radio Shack. In fact, i think they're in league with the devil, not too sure. I only linked them above because their site is fairly easy to search and their prices aren't completely insane, only slightly. I'd be willing to bet you money that you already have a 12v AC/DC power adapter lying behind a component or in a box some place that is no longer in use. Look around, I'd guess that 90% of the home electronics stuff that requires an external power adapter (the power cord has a big block that plugs into the wall, not just a standard power cord) run on 12volts. A 12v AC/DC adapter is a common household item these days.

I found a 9v adapter. Says input: 120v AC and output: 9v DC.. So, this is what I need, though I don't know if it will give enuff juice to the fan. I don't need much, just enuff to make it spin, so we'll see.
Thanks for your input, Wahoo, saved me some batteries.

DAMNIT. Still can't get the damn thing to work..
Fallen - the wires on my fan are red, black and WHITE, not red black and yellow.. I just assumed the white/yellow wires were the same thing. You must understand that I know nothing about electricity.
The wires on the adapter are separate. There are two wires connected at the middle, like siamese twins. I split them, removed the insulation, and now I have a 9v adapter with two loose wire-ends.
What the hell do I hook to what? Red and white to one side and black to the other? Red to one side and black to the other? Red to one and white to the other? I have no idea. I've been just trying to connect the red and black to the two ends off the adapter, because Fallen said the yellow (or in my case, white) wire is not in use.
I'm lost. Sorry..

Another question for you electonic peps.....If you have 2 fans (inlet & exhuast) do you need a 12V adapter for each one?

I think I burned up the 9v adapter.. I wired the two ends together and then wired that into all three wires going into the fan. I know, probably a dumbass thing to do, but I was getting frustrated and thought that maybe some juice would get to the stupid little fan. The adapter was hot as hell when I unplugged it, and when I shook it something was rattling around inside.
PLEASE HELP! I have another 9v supply if necessary.

u needa make sure the ac/dc adapter has enough amps to power the fan . the fan should have ground, positive, and rpm sensor. ground should be black, dunno bout positive.

OOKLA is correct. I'm looking at 3 pc fans now, all 3 have different sensor wire colors, white, blue and yellow. Black and red are the wires you'll want to use. It is possible that 9v is not enough to get that fan spinning, something to consider. Also, are you sure the fan still works? And OOKLA again is right, swapping the red and black wires will make the fan spin the opposite direction, but it should still work. A rule of thumb I've picked up working on computers is that pc fans almost always have a round sticker with the manufacturer's name on the fan and the fan is built to move air in the direction of the sticker. Again though, it probably doesn't matter that much. And the sticker thing is just something I've observed.

I've got no 12v adapter.
Is there any way to plug two in, a 3.7v and a 9v and splice the two? or am I asking for trouble doing that? lol. Not gonna try until someone answers me for fear of setting something on fire.
This fan is just so tiny, I can't believe that a 9v wouldn't run it.
I'm pretty sure the fan is still good. Also, can you burn up the adapter by running the two end wires together?

ok found a 12v adapter. It was one off an old n64. it connects to the wall normally, and the adapter plugs into the n64 via a 7 pin female connector. The connector is diagrammed on the adapter, showing which pin slot is what - one is 12v and one is negative. So, plugged the wires into that, and it started working. But only for a bit. Then it just quit, and won't work again.

Here's what to do.
Get a used PC Power supply.
Plug it into the wall, plug your PC fan into one of the SEVERAL output jacks coming out of the PSU. End of discussion.
