growth on paper towel?
    #1614271 - 06/06/03 09:14 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

A friend of mine grew some fruits using the cake method a couple of months ago..... the cake only fruited once then turned blue and seemed to be used up..... the cake was completely neglected for about 2 months simply sitting in the terrarium without any spraying or anything of that sort..... my friend opened up the terrarium yesterday to clean it out for the next crop and there was little fruits growing on a paper towel that was sitting underneath the jar lid and the cake..... upon further investigation she noticed that there was mycelium growing in the perlite underneath as well.....
All of this greatly puzzled me as I was under the impression that mycelium needed some kind of nutrients to grow and neither the perlite or the paper towel seem to have these...... this on top of the fact that there was no humidity being introduced to the enviroment makes it extra confusing.... Anyone have any idea why this happened? My friend isn't planning on eating these or anything.... just wondering why it happened.....

There is some nutrients in the paper towel...it is a form of wood. As for the growth on the perilite....I believe the mycilium works as a network, possibly pulling nutrients from other places....
Also are you sure it is actually myc on the perilite....I've had that happen before too...but upon futher inspection.....the white was actually some of the broken down perilite (powder crumbs) soaked with water.

First off the mycelium can break down the cellulose in the paper for food (yum!) and yes, mycelium does form a network (if you were unawer, I'd suggest some serious reading time). This is why casings work. There is no nutrition in the casing layer, but the mycelium is still abel to grow through it because it is transporting nutrient from the substrate.
