Automation for Air exchange??
    #1614422 -

i was thinking of biulding some sort of semi-automated set up.
I use perlite for humidity..which is fine.
and i dont want to bother with lights.
i'd like to make something that would take care of air exchange...
any recommendations? or pics?
(i can get hold of computer fans pretty easily if that helps...)

I thought even a continuous aquarium pump still needed fanning every once in a while?

All the guides I've read say a humidifier is needed for completely automated air flow.

I'd love to be wrong here, I have a pump but was planning on buying a humidifier, mostly for the air flow.

Hey my friend is just building her Terarrium too!...and was thinking the same thing about the computer fans.....1 inputing fresh air and one outputing the stale CO2ed air.....with a timer.....with poly fil or filters on them. Sounds like it would work.....anyone try that?......she uses perilite for humidity too!

You want a easy set up

Dude, if you want a COMPLETELY automated set up, use perlite for humidity, and use 12V computer fans for air exchange ( an exhaust and intake) Just get one of those 12V "boxes" for various uses like charging cell phones then strip the wires on the end and hook it up to the fans, really easy. And you could set it all up on those dial timers, lights, fans, etc. Peace.

so would the fishtank thing be better than computer fans??
just that i can get em so easily...cheap and cheerful i like...but if its a trade off for functionality i'd rather save up and do it right.
i'v just been fanning them by hand each day up until now...which i dont mind...
but its nearly summer here (UK) and i'm likely to be out and about a lot more so could do with being able go away for a week or two here and there without worrying about em.
dont get me wrong ...i love tending to my little babies on a daily basis...but i dont wanna be a hermit ...not yet anyway.

ok...so two computer fans with filters on a 12V power supply with some sort of timer/trip type thing?
sounds good...
anything not good about this setup?
just sounds ideal...minimal cost.

Hiya mate

You can find air stones at your local pet store but they are brittle and break quite easily.. flexible air diffusers on the other hand are excellent and very cheap !

Check out this  site

12" Flexible Air Diffuser - $3.95
24" Flexible Air Diffuser - $4.95
36" Flexible Air Diffuser - $6.95

Features:

Flexible design allows placement in hard to reach areas
Easy to hide
Can be bent to create many interesting shapes and patterns
Easy to clean
Produces an attractive curtain of air
6 different models with 0.4" diameter
Sinks itself to the bottom of aquarium
Can be used in freshwater or saltwater
Only flexible rubber air diffuser currently available in the United States

Just hook them up to a cheap aquarium air pump and put them under your geolite !

it is best to not have a fan for ehxaust because a positive pressure system with only one fan blowing in creates a better environment-according to TMC.

If you have a fan you'll have to have a hole and you might have a problem with humidity you got to keep it up to around 90% don't forget.

You have a lot of options open to you for sure

My friend uses a el-cheapo Cool-mist that has 2 old cut up water hoses (people just seem to leave them out on the lawn for some reason he says... jk jk) that are connected to 2 58 liter Sterlite (rubbermaid ripoff) tubs that you can get at wallyworld for $3.85 or something. no timer, just plug it in. 85-90% Humidity depending on room temp.
Total cost was well under $20.00 he says.

theres no need for any fans with the' poor man's pod' setup (it works very well w/o fanning at all). the only thing you really need to worry about is getting a pump that will provide 2-3 complete air exchanges per hour (most pumps are too weak). the DW series by Tetra are expensive, but are just about the highest quality pump that will do the job. good luck

.. and also consider that if the pump costs more then a $7-12 cool mist you are much better off with the cool mist.

Skippy saw this post and went right ot work. Skippy loves simple automation. He cut out a piece ok vinyl from a loose leaf and made sure that the top self tapping screws attached to the vinyl. He thinks if he did a new Poor Mans Pod from scratch, he would run a bead of silicon along the top for 100% securing.

The fan blows the vinyl to the side and when it shuts off, the vinyl lays down to seal the chamber. Zero RH% loss... Skippy can actually feel the air being pushed out of his C02 escape holes that are filled with polyfill!

He is getting a Intermatic DT17C timer later. How many minutes per session,
per day should he run his computer fan?
