The best intelligence they have
    #1613497 - 06/06/03 01:47 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

The United Nations chief weapons inspector has criticised the quality of the intelligence given to him by the United States and Britain about Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction.

Hans Blix told the BBC that his teams followed up US and British leads at suspected sites across Iraq, but found nothing when they got there.

A team of UN nuclear inspectors will arrive in Iraq on Friday, but the United States will only allow it to carry out a limited inspection at a nuclear storage facility.

The BBC's Greg Barrow at the UN says Mr Blix's comments will add to the growing controversy over the quality of intelligence used in the run-up to the Iraq war.

However US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has insisted that the information had been good.

In a BBC interview on Thursday, Mr Blix said he had been disappointed with the tip-offs provided by British and US intelligence.

"Only in three of those cases did we find anything at all, and in none of these cases were there any weapons of mass destruction, and that shook me a bit, I must say."

He said UN inspectors had been promised the best information available.

"I thought - my God, if this is the best intelligence they have and we find nothing, what about the rest?"

Iran Backs Coalition Claims of Hidden Iraqi WMD
Stewart Stogel
Friday June 6, 2003
New York -- An Iranian government official with ties to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said Tehran had received intelligence indicating that the government of Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was indeed hiding weapons of mass destruction (WMD)from UN inspectors.
"Yes, we agree with the Americans. Our intelligence indicated that Iraq did possess weapons of mass destruction and was hiding them from the UN."

The source, who requested confidentiality, went on to say that the big question is: "What did the Iraqis do with these weapons?"

While Teheran does not know where these weapons may be today, there is a strong suspicion that some may have filtered onto local black markets.

"We know other items once under military control (such as broadcast transmission equipment) have found their way onto the black market," says the official.

"We have people coming to Teheran from Baghdad with catalogs of items (stolen from the Iraqi government) offering them for sale." So far, the source claims no WMD offerings have shown up in Iran ... yet.

The Iranian revelation comes as the Bush administration and the government of UK prime minister Tony Blair have come under increased fire on the issue of whether Iraq was still in possession of prohibited weapons prior to the March invasion.

The issue of WMD and its possible possession by Baghdad was repeatedly cited by President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Blair as a central reason for launching Operation Iraqi Freedom.

More than two months later, neither US nor UK military forces have been able to find any evidence of hidden Iraqi WMD.

Calls for Congressional and Parliamentary investigations into the secret weapons issue are increasing on Capitol Hill and in London.

Blair, in a Wednesday speech before the British House of Commons and Bush in a Thursday speech before US troops at Central Command Headquarters in Doha, Qatar, insisted that given enough time, Coalition forces will uncover the secret(and well hidden)Iraqi weapons.

Those claims clashed with comments by UN chief weapons inspector Hans Blix who told a meeting of the UN Security Council on Thursday that his personnel "saw no evidence of hidden WMD during their latest rounds of inspections."

Those inspections began in December 2002 and lasted till March 18, 2003, one day before the US and UK attacked Iraq.

Blix did qualify his findings by admitting prohibited Iraqi weapons may still exist, but there was no way he could be sure, since UN arms inspectors have not been allowed into Iraq since the Coalition invasion.

For the first time since the invasion, Washington and London are permitting a limited inspection of a major Iraqi nuclear installation by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The IAEA (the UN's atomic watchdog) is sending an emergency seven member inspection team to the Tuwaitha nuclear center, 15 mi south of Baghdad by week's end.

More than 500 tons of toxic nuclear waste had been stored and sealed at the center by the IAEA prior to the overthrow of the Iraqi government.

Local reports from the area claim much of the waste was looted during the war.

IAEA officials familiar with the nuclear materials explain that some of them could be used by terrorists to fashion a so-called "dirty bomb".

The agency says that Washington has decided to impose a news blackout on the activities of the IAEA team in Iraq. The inspections are tentatively scheduled to last two weeks.

"Nobody in Baghdad will be available to brief the press," says one IAEA official. The official added, "we don't know what to expect, this is new territory."

Coincidentally, IAEA director-general Mohamed ElBaradei decided not to attend the UN Security Council briefing on the Iraqi arms issue in New York City on Thursday.

"What did the Iraqis do with these weapons?"

Saddam put them under his pillow and the WMD fairy came and took them all away.

From Stratfor:
A September 2002 U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) report indicated that there was "no reliable information" that proved that Iraq possessed chemical weapons, Bloomberg reported June 6, citing a summary of the report. However, the report did indicate that Iraq probably had stockpiles of chemical agents. "There is no reliable information on whether Iraq is producing and stockpiling chemical weapons, or whether Iraq has -- or will establish -- its chemical warfare agent production facilities," the report said. The report also indicated that the DIA believed Iraq had stockpiles of biological agents, but did not have the evidence to prove it. "Iraq is assessed to possess biological agent stockpiles that may be weaponized and ready for use," the report continued. "The size of those stockpiles is uncertain and is subject to debate. The nature and condition of those stockpiles also are unknown." The report, titled "Iraq: Key Weapons Facilities -- An Operational Support Study," was initially detailed in the June 9 edition of U.S. News & World Report.

From AFP:
A US defence official confirmed on Friday that the US Defense Intelligence Agency had reported before the war it had "no reliable information" that Iraq had chemical and biological weapons.

"It is fair to say there was no reliable information to say declaratively, 'yes, there was stuff," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

But the official said that there was reliable information to say "with a degree of confidence that there was a weapons program", the official said.

Pretty much the same story is being run in these and these..

The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

possibly, the weapons of mass distruction were so small, that they were practically handheld and are now hidden or out of the country.

maybe the wmds Iraq had are a new breed of microscopic wmds that you need a microscope to see? Maybe Iraq developed an innovative invisible ointment and rubbed it all over the wmds so we couldnt find them? maybe they launched them into outerspace to terrorist aliens or into the sun in an attempt to destroy it? Maybe they took a line from cheech and chong and made cars and tvs out of the wmds and exported them to the us? Maybe Saddam Hussein has a secret cavern in the center of the earth where he is crygenically frozen with all his wmds and plans on comiing back after everyone least expects it and destroy america, then austin powers will come to our rescue and save the world?

Maybe. I don't claim to know.

The article merely states other's believed the weapons existed. Unless you suppose for some reason the Iranians suddenly want to help Bush?

"Others"? Not even the americans believed they existed.

Unless you suppose for some reason the Iranians suddenly want to help Bush?

You think that 8 year war they had with Iraq might have something to do with it?

But really. If there were a WMD programe capable of haming the US, they would have found something and it would be all over the news.

They didn't. Not even a scrap worth mentioning. You'd have to be an idiot to believe they have WMD....., but thats not saying they werent ever there, just that america lied blatantly, then offered cover excuses, and then admitted to lying, and people are happy believing both sides, it doesn't matter anymore.

Can you make a point instead of posting the same childish nonsense you've posted thousands of times? You appear to be as addicted to this behaviour as you were to crack.

There are several posts above stating quite clearly american intelligence did not believe Saddam had chemical weapons. Could you address these points for once.

The only thing I've said on this matter is it wouldn't surprise me if Saddam had the weapons. Never claimed he did or didn't.

I'm sorry. Did I just see you ask for someone to answer questions?

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

We're still waiting for you to answer these....
----------------------------------------------
1) Do you agree with the UN decision to expel the Iraqi occupation army from Kuwait by force in 1991?
Yes _______
No ________
Additional comments ____________________________________

2) Do you agree with their decision to leave Hussein in power in 1991 rather than eliminating him when they had the chance?
Yes _______
No ________
Additional comments ______________________________________

3) If Hussein continues to ignore the terms of the 1991 surrender agreement should the UN continue to do nothing more than file more condemnatory resolutions?
Yes _______
No________

3 a) If you answered "no", what other actions should the UN take instead of or in addition to filing more resolutions?
i) _____________________________
ii) ____________________________
iii)____________________________

4) If the UN supports this proposed military action the way they supported the Gulf War, would you still oppose military intervention in Iraq?
Yes________
No_________
Additional comments ________________________

5) Rank the following possibilities to the resolution of the Iraq situation from best option (1) to second best (2), to third best (3), etc. Feel free to add as many more options of your own as you wish, including them (of course) in the ranking.

( ) -- Hussein resigns voluntarily, free democratic elections in Iraq are held

( ) -- Hussein is overthrown (or assassinated) by internal Iraqi agents, free elections in Iraq are held

( ) -- Hussein fulfills all the terms of the 1991 surrender agreement, and continues as Ultimate Leader of Iraq

( ) -- Hussein is captured (or assassinated) by a "SWAT team" of agents of a foreign power, free elections in Iraq are held

( ) -- Hussein is captured or killed by a UN-backed military invasion of Iraq, free elections in Iraq are held.

( ) -- Hussein is captured or killed by a military invasion of Iraq that has no UN approval, free elections in Iraq are held.

( ) -- The UN lifts all sanctions, and arranges loans large enough to rebuild Iraq on the condition that Iraq fulfills all the terms of the 1991 surrender agreement, with the additional proviso that Hussein resign and free democratic elections in Iraq are held

( ) -- The UN lifts all sanctions, and arranges loans large enough to rebuild Iraq on the condition that Iraq fulfills all the terms of the 1991 surrender agreement, Hussein remains in power

( ) -- The UN lifts all sanctions, and arranges loans large enough to rebuild Iraq, Hussein remains in power

( ) -- The UN lifts all sanctions, and no one takes any further action apart from filing resolutions condemning Iraq, Hussein remains in power

( ) -- Alex123 proposal A

( ) -- Alex123 proposal B

( ) -- Alex123 proposal C

------------------------------

Now I don't expect you to answer these, I merely remind you of them to show what an incredible hypocrite you are.

If you'd like I can put together a list of points in many threads you either failed to address or evaded.

You must think peoples memories are short.
