1 cup of RG per quart?

In a tek I am following it calls for 1 cup of Rye Berries per quart jar, this only fills like 1/4 of the jar. Do they really expand that much that 1 cup will = about 2/3 of the quart jar?
Thanks

I do a 24 hr soak and a 15 to 20 min simmer. One cup per qt jar works out well for me. You could always use a little extra just in case. Rye is pretty cheap.

Not if you have to have it shipped it's not. I just paid $48 and change for 25lbs organic shipped. Still cheap enough to use some extra though, I'm not to worried about it....lol

That is pricey! Still, you're only talking a cup or two. Better to prepare a little too much than a little too little! Lol

Do you have a Whole Foods near you? I pick up rye or wheat berries there for around a buck a pound.

Overfilling jars is a mistake newbs make. Don't fall into the trap. One dry cup of rye makes one quart jar. With WBS, it's about 1.5 cups dry per quart.
Which grain tek are you using? I'd recommend doing it like RR does in his videos.

No Whole Foods near me (next state over). I am using RR's Tek to prep, but am doing Mexicana for sclerotia so I wanted to make sure 1 cup will be enough to maximize harvest. I am using stonesun/cervantes tek's...

Follow the teks to the letter. Do NOT second guess stonesun and cervantes in regards to sclerotia production.

Cervantes tek was posted long ago and I never worked with grains before so I got a quart jar and saw where the 1 cup mark was and before seeing that rr's grain prep also called for 1 cup, I thought "Damn is that a typo". I did not mean to second guess anyone I just wasn't sure....
I actually came back to delete the post after seeing that but saw people had already responded...lol
PS- Thanks...

That's not in the tek.
Just kidding.
Cervates' info may be a bit older, but it's all valid. Stonesun is giving you the Word of God. And RR's videos have been watched literally millions of times. IF there were errors or addenda, it would be known. Trust the teks.
And let me add this- avoid LC from spores. Use spores->agar->grain then clone a stone on agar and do agar->grain->GLC or g2g.

I will attest that rye expands more than you'd think. I was amazed the first time I used it. And remember, you don't want your quart jar filled. You need to shake it, and shaking sucks when you overfill.

That was funny.
Ok, just out of curiosity, why do you say avoid LC from spores? I am really curious. Is this with sclerotia only or with all MS?

So I've been lookin all over at different threads similar to this one and I can't seem to get the answer I'm looking for. Everyone answers this question assuming that it is dry rye berries being used. Being the noob that I am I ordered presterilized rye berries where all I needed to do was inoculate...and I'm using a spawn bag. I want to use monstermitch's monotub method, and it calls for a ratio of 10 lbs of substrate to 6qts of spawn. So I guess my question is does anyone know the conversion for lbs to qts of colonized rye. Or if and one knows how many pounds of spawn I should use for 10 lbs of substrate?

One cup of dry rye berries after a proper soak is the correct amount for one quart jar. Remember, you need at least 1/3 of the jar available as free space for shaking.
If you're growing sclerotia, you can double the amount of coffee in the soak water. Coffee really helps with sclerotia producing species, even more than non-stone producing species.

Whole Foods
That's the last place you should shop. They're a corporate entity which only stocks items from large corporate mega-farms which destroy the environment. They also refuse to buy anything from small mom-and-pop farms, choosing instead to stock their stores with imported 'organic' produce from countries with no regulation on what can be labeled organic or not. Put them on your boycott list along with walmart. RR
