Tactical Snail said: Japan is not nearly as overpopulated as people think it is. It is a little crowded, but not too bad. Its actually 38th in the world in population density according to Wikipedia. Putting it behind countries like the Netherlands. Even in Japan there are small towns and rural areas. Places like Tokyo aren't all that much worse then New York. Besides, the real issue with overpopulation is resources, not density. There is literally enough space in Brazil for every single person in the world to have their own acre of land. If any single country gets so seriously overpopulated that they can't live happily, they can move easily enough to a place with more space.
If we got rid of all the wild animals we could fit more people They're unimportant after all.

Supposedly all the world's current population could live within the state of Texas. Leaving us with considerable land mass to manage resources efficiently.
It's the utterly wasteful and destructive way that we use resources that is the main problem.

Nexun hit on a good point. The world is not overpopulated due to humans taking up too much land. The world is overpopulated because more people=more extinct species, higher pollution rates, and more deforstation which is helping to put humanity in a very very dangerous time

One thing about overpopulation is it can be corrected rather quickly. If life becomes miserable because of overpopulation I believe humans will realize it and stop breeding so quickly. Pacific island cultures have had this problem for thousands of years and developed ways limiting birth rates.

Overpopulation will only become a problem if the research and technology to sustain a heightened population isn't addressed.
And just to say it - it's not people as a whole who shouldn't be allowed to have children - it's people who can't support, afford, or adequately fend for the child they are producing. As someone irl pointed out to me the other day, we can't stop men and women from having sex so there's no way this can be addressed. My only solution was for sterilization to be introduced to countries whose residents don't have the resources to take care of their children. I'm not talking about anything permanent - men get clipped before they reach an age of sexual maturity - and don't argue the women should be fixed, it's much cheaper and less invasive for a man to be fixed vs. a woman.

historiclly people have already faced overpopulation and have controlled birth rates look at the island of yap for example
you say technology can fix it but the earth has limited resources to say technology will be able to overcome such a problem is a guessing game, we would have get the resources from other planets which is a huge technical challenge perhaps it could be accomplished but to assume so seems naive.

Overpopulation doesn't bother me as much as considering that most everyone is the same, so adding more is like adding relish on your pickles.

An extremely valid point. Another thing to consider is that very few countries/regions of the world have much more than, let's say 2 or 3 kids per household. I BELIEVE (could be wrong on this) that America's birthrates are declining, as are either Western or Eastern Europe's among others. China was notorious for it but then they implimented the one child policy. I don't plan on having kids in my life, maybe one. Maybe. If I get around to it.

theres about 1000 square feet for each person in the world in texas.
thats a small house for each person, but you have to subtract out things like roads and rivers
