bird seed in the jar
    #1613118 - 06/05/03 11:32 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, after my cat pressure cooked his wild bird seed in a few pickle jars (these were easier to find than quart jars in my area), he left them sitting in the kitchen without shaking them, mainly because he is a cat and simple concepts like shaking easily slip his mind. He found that the seed had caked together in the jar and wondered if this would make colonization more difficult or if it would grow normally and need to be broken up later for casing like a brf cake. Danke.

I know someone who used unshaken cakes, and they colonized in 2 weeks =) thats a shitload faster than PF Tek. Your probably ok unless there are two very distinct layers in the jar. even then it will colonize, it just might take longer.,

Shaking the jars will speed colonization, but they will still colonize without. You will have to break it up prior to casing it.

Dog's right. Just keep in mind that mycelium grows best in a loosely packed substrate, with lots of air pockets. If you shake it or not, well, in the end it doesn't matter, but it might speed things up a bit.
