Isn't washing suppose to ruin the flavor of some mushrooms?

Also, if you spray a little water on the gills you might get a darker spore print.

Does that really work?

Yes.  Badidiospore ejection only happens in high humidity.

and just for the FYI cause I know Psylo keeps asking, a track is 3.4 grams roughly. I ate 3.5 grams dried. Not quite as potent as Cyans, which only takes about 2 to really trip. That also depends on where you find them too, however. But they are very very similar.

suchen asks:Does that really work? I will have to try that next time.I would say though that it may lead to rotting/unwanted condensation rather than a better spore print.

It works for me.

I had a cap that wouldn't give a good print overnight because of dryness. I added water to the gills and it came out super duper dark. This was on white paper - haven't tried it on foil.

It was an inedible, inactive mushroom so I wasn't worried about rot, etc. The cap gets rehydrated and I'd imagine rot could be an issue if you intend to eat the fungi - but an active cap amongst dozens or hundreds isn't a big sacrifice at all for a spore print.

I'd imagine if you did a "wet" print in a clean environment, covered with glass, you could rush the caps into the dehydrator before they rot.

It will not work if the cap is too dried out.

On the show Good Eats, Alton Brown explores mushroom washing. View 8:13-12:54. On another episode he does a technique where he quickly rinses the fungi and then puts them in a salad spinner. Of course this is for store bought Agaricus only.

i just figure if a mushroom sat outside and got rained on for days, whats a little rinseing going to do!? then you just dry sautee for the first little bit til all the excess water comes out , drain it, and add butter or olive oil.
