8 days no colonization, why...why
    #1612413 - 06/05/03 05:31 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Okay- 8 days ago i mixed up 12 1/2 pint jars with, the vermiculite, brf, water and sterilized them by boiling for 60 minutes- no pressure cooker... then they cooled- were completely cool and then innoculated and put in a room where the temp ranges from 75-85- not a damn thing has happend no sign of colonization or nothing- the only few things i can think of is the cake looks a lil wetter than ones of pictures i have seen, and possibly put in about 1/4 cup to little of vermiculite- which means it needed another 1/4 cup- other than that i dont know what to think- i have moved them into a styrophone cooler and the temp is at a stable 80%- all advice is appreciated. by the way its the ecuador cubensis strain

I hear It can take up to two weeks for first signs of colonization. Start to worry when its been two weeks.

If the stuff inside looks mushy, you are in bad shape. If not you should be fine. Raise the incubation temp alittle. 75 is too cold. raise to like 90 or 85. GL

Are they completely sealed off from air? My first time after the jars were inoculated I put tape over the holes, waited two weeks nothing. Took the tops of the jars off placed foil over the top and growth began within three days. The jars were also moved to a warmer room because its not airconditioned its probably around 85 degrees. The access to air was the contributing factor because I left half of my jars with the taped lids and they still did nothing. A few days later removed them, growth started over night.

Sounds like you messed up your BRF/Verm mix.

It still might work...just give it a little more time.

good luck!

so your saying i need to give them air? i never at any point had tape over them- the 4 holes are in the jar lids, but i was told the 1/2 layer of dry verm. would keep out contams. anyways i just moved them into a styrophone cooler- it has dropped below 80 insid it either, maybe that will do something...

Again, fortyounces2freedom seems to hit a spot here...When I started my operations, I became extremely frustrated after a couple of batches resulting in nothing or contams. Turned out the spores weren't viable.
However, there can be like a zillion other reasons why growth hasn't started. Wet rot is indeed a possibility, but if there's no funny smell, wet rot is out of the question.
It's also possible that your cakes are simply too wet, in which case mycelial growth will be extremely slow, or there will possibly be no growth at all. I've said it earlier, and I'll say it again: better have your cakes too dry than too wet. If they're on the dry side, you can always dunk them before you birth them.

For now, just have a little patience. As your jars are a bit on the wet side, don't expect the mycelium to colonize at full speed. It will simply take longer.

tip your jars upside down for two days or so, loosen the lids just alittle.you said you there's hole in the lid right the water should come out, when you boil them but tin foil over the lids that might kept water from going in there or use less water when boiling.there's a tip from my ferry god mother
