Today is my birthday....
    #1612072 - 06/05/03 03:21 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

and it just dawned on me how much a deal people think birthdays are. First off, i was not born today. I was born many years ago. Secondly, the aniversary is based on a calender - someone manmade. I am what I am, any numbers attached to me is a concept - not reality.

Am I the only one who realizes this?

Everyone i know got so weirded out when I told them I didnt want anything today . I woke up, went to work, got on my computer just like a normal day. It IS a normal day

Thoughts?

It is just a concept. If I lived on Mercuary for the same amount of time as I have been on Earth, I'd be 237 years old.....or something like that.

cool, I thought I was the only one who thought B-days are nothing special.  Only thing remotely interesting is just the fact the earth has travelled around the sun a certain number of times since you were born. Do you celebrate other people's birthdays or do you stick to your "it's nothing special" idea and not give a shit? It's hard for me to not care and not come off as an asshole  so I got my mom flowers and a card for her birthday (while my dad got her like 5 big gifts). And I know for some people if you don't give them lots of attention on their birthday they may get angry at you, it's like some ego-trip they get to go on once a year.

ego trip exactly.

I still celebrate others because sadly I would be looked down upon if I didnt cater to them on their birthdays. sad, but true.

Easier to flow with it, then fight it.

I'm having some difficulty with this thing, 'cause I remember what I was doing when I turned 20, 30, 40, and next month I'm turning 50. I don't look 50, or even 40, and last year I got carded to get into a club at Ft. lauderdake at 1:00 AM, but the fact remains that I'm turning 50. I talk to my Lady about the day. Part of me wants to drop acid alone - a spiritual thing. Another part of me wants to go to a top of the line Miami strip club and get swarmed by strippers (but m'Lady says she has to supervise). I keep a fantasy that says that I'm going to live to 120, but who knows of course. My mid-life crisis has me not knowing whether to 'play or pray.' I'm in great shape and great health, so I shouldn't even be whining about anything, but re-centering on the Eternal. Maybe I won't have a birthday this year - but that would be denial. Only a month to go, better think quick. Just wait til it happens to you!

I totally disagree with most of you guys.  I think it is a constant reminder of your mortality.  I think this helps you evaluate your positions on things and keeps them in perspective.  As you age, you have references with which to place goals.  Also it also you keep memories fresh.  It can provide reminders of important events in your life.  What is wrong with having one day a year that everyone caters to you?  It allows people to express their appreciation for things you have done for them, and how much they care for you without seeming to cheesy.  And I like to have the excuse to get ALL of my friends together in one place to have fun.  By the way, my birthday's tommorow.

Happy birthday supermarket!

It's hard for me to not care and not come off as an asshole so I got my mom flowers and a card for her birthday...

The Hallmark and Flower boutiques' brainwashing techniques have worked quite well. Isn't guilt a wonderful manipulative tool?

Will your "wishing" actually have any real affect on the outcome of his day whatsoever, or is it mere a societal nicety?

You are so right swami, I've been had  :frown: (though it wasn't a Hallmark card and it was actually a single plant with a few flowers in a pot I bought her, I didn't make it clear earlier)
