No jars? No problem! (ciggy pack) UPDATED 1st post

I haven't seen this anywhere, and I've heard lots of people say they cannot find jars because they are out of season, or they don't have e-bay/paypal, etc..
This was a proof of concept sort of deal, I was sitting around smoking a cigarette and the thought occurred to me "Why can't I make a mini-myco bag out of this cigarette celophane?" So I took the challenge. I have plenty of jars, that's not the issue, I just wanted to see if it was possible to help those who don't have access to jars, or they can only find the shouldered type, etc..
Well here is something almost everyone has either laying around their house, or knows where to get some.. hell, I bet you can't walk 2 blocks without seeing an empty pack on the side of the road. (just clean it with soap and water, and make sure it doesn't look like it's been run over).
Introducing the "No Jars? No problem" tek
Supplies

^ I only used regular reds.. in fact, next time, I will use 100's.(since they are bigger)
- cigarette celophane wrappers, cig carton wrapper (optional)
- 100% clear silicone
- brown medical tape, or duct tape
- Tyvek (like the kind used on USPS Priority fabric mailers)
- Pressure cooker (it's not necessary, but I find it very efficient, you can also steam sterilize using a regular pot ala the PF Tek)
- Everything needed for PF Tek (except for jars obviously) : vermiculite, brown rice (or brown rice flour, I just put brown rice in a blender and made brown rice flour) perlite, plastic tub, tin foil
First, cut a square out of one side of the celophane, about the size of a hit of acid. Cover that square hole with a slightly larger piece of tyvek and tape it down on all four sides with duct tape (outside only! not inside the bag), this is for gas exchange. Take your brown rice flour and vermiculite mixture (follow PF tek to a T) fill cigarette celophane about 1/3 to 1/2 full of mixture. Basically, you want to get as much as you can in there but still be able to fold the top over a couple times and seal it with the brown tape.
You can even use the celophane that the carton of cigs comes in. This will make a lot of spawn which can either be fruited in the bag, birthed as a cake, or crumbled to a flower pot like I did.
Steam sterilize or PC the bags via the PF Tek (I pc'd mine for 90 mins at 15psi)
Allow to cool over night.
Next day, put a piece of either duct tape, or brown medical tape as seen in the pics below on the opposite side of the tyvek, and put a blob of silicone sealant on the piece of tape, this will be your self-sealing injection port. Allow this to dry for a few more hours. inoculate with a shroomery sponsor's spores. I prefer www.freespores.com, graham has always taken good care of me.
After a few days it should look like this:

This is the carton "myco bag" (note the 1/2 pint jar next to it for size reference)

Left one shows the tyvek gas exchange, right one shows the innoc point (silicone blob fell off, no worries)

ciggy pack nearly 100% colonized/consolidated:

Carton dunk:

Decided to crumble the carton to coir (coconut husks) 1:1 spawn to coir ratio)
Due to near freezing temps overnight, I left the flower pot outside in the day time (uncovered, misting occasionally), and brought it in at night) After about 5 days I read somewhere where people like to put bags over their tubs, so I decided to use a quart sized ziplock and place it over and duct tape it around to create a humid enclosure that still let's in light. I also cut a 1"x1" square hole in it and covered with white micropore medical tape (breathable), sort of like I did in miniature with the ciggy bags, except there I used tyvek.

Three or four days later it was almost ready to go in the Shotgun Fruiting Chamber:

A few days in the SGFC, and ..Flower pot pins! These are Indian Malibar

Mature:

And finally the cigarette packs as cakes (these are Freestone Texas) :

Bottom line, you can use cigarette packs to grow mushrooms if you don't have jars or a PC. Hope this helps at least one person.

Very cool! I would have imagined that cellophane would 'shrink wrap' in a pressure cooker.

Thanks fellas, but I have no delusions of grandeur, these ciggy bags will never be able to replace 1/2 pint jars
(this one was birthed the same day as the bags)

Multispore. And the whole project started with inoculation on or around the 20th of March, so about 1 month for first pins. Probably 3 weeks to fully colonize/consolidate and then a week in the fruiting chamber. This was my first grow so I think I did a few things wrong, plus timing was bad around the house. Next project I definitely see some ways to optimize this. I finally have RH/FAE dialed in.
A couple easy fixes/improvements: Next time I will use 100's I lost an entire week due to putting them in the wrong part of my house for colonization, I didn't see any mycellum growth until 3 days after I put them in a warmer place. I only used 3 ciggy packs, just as an experiment. Two haven't even started pinning yet, but I believe that is because they are the Indian Malibar strain which seems to be much slower. I still have a lot of learning to do, but this was a fun first project.

The OP said to follow the pf tek to a "T". The original pf tek calls for 2 parts verm, 1 part brf and 1 part water.

Correct, one caveat though, the only thing you don't need to do (unless you want to) is put the dry verm layer on top when filling your bags.. this is mainly for jars or cups covered with tinfoil since contams can enter there.. with the bags there is really no need to add dry verm at the top, unless you don't trust your tape on the folded down bag openings.
Thanks for chiming in foo.. I've always enjoyed reading your teks/grow logs.

Boy these Malabar India are just beautiful. (I still can't get over these were grown from a carton of cigarettes) I find them much more aesthetically pleasing than the freestone Texas. It's like the Taj Mahal or something..

Update on the other two ciggy packs, they are now starting to pin:

The first ciggy pack is still chugging along after recovering from oxygen starvation..heh

Thanks and I should mention... it's not just for those with no jars. Let's say you have 10 jars available, and you have extra BRF/Verm left over, don't toss it, fill up a ciggy pack. Or, you have 10 jars available, and you can only fill up 9, but not enough for that last jar, fill up a couple ciggy packs.
