  • 1937:  Jack Nicholson is born

Quote:

John Joseph "Jack" Nicholson (born April 22, 1937) is an American actor, film director, producer and writer. He is renowned for his often dark-themed portrayals of neurotic characters. Nicholson has been nominated for Academy Awards 12 times. He has won the Academy Award for Best Actor twice, for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and for As Good as It Gets. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the 1983 film Terms of Endearment. He is tied with Walter Brennan for most acting wins by a male actor (three), and second to Katharine Hepburn for most acting wins overall (four).

He is also one of only two actors nominated for an Academy Award for acting (either lead or supporting) in every decade from the 1960s to 2000s (the other one being Michael Caine). He has won seven Golden Globe Awards, and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2001. In 1994, he became one of the youngest actors to be awarded the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award. Notable films in which he has starred include, in chronological order, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Shining, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Reds, Terms of Endearment, Batman, A Few Good Men, As Good as It Gets, About Schmidt, Something's Gotta Give and The Departed.

Rise to fame

With his acting career heading nowhere, Nicholson seemed resigned to a career behind the camera as a writer/director. His first real taste of writing success was the LSD-fueled screenplay for 1967's The Trip (directed by Corman), which starred Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. Nicholson also co-wrote, with Bob Rafelson, the movie Head, which starred The Monkees. In addition, he also arranged the movie's soundtrack. However, after a spot opened up in Fonda and Hopper's Easy Rider, it led to his first big acting break. Nicholson played hard-drinking lawyer George Hanson, for which he received his first Oscar nomination. The part of Hanson was a lucky break for Nicholson—the role had in fact been written for actor Rip Torn, who was a close friend of screen writer Terry Southern, but Torn withdrew from the project after a bitter argument with the film's director Dennis Hopper, during which the two men almost came to blows.

A Best Actor nomination came the following year for his persona-defining role in Five Easy Pieces (1970). Also that year, he appeared in the movie adaptation of On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, although most of his performance was left on the cutting room floor.

Other Nicholson roles included Hal Ashby's The Last Detail (1973), for which he was awarded Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival, and the classic Roman Polanski noir thriller, Chinatown (1974). Nicholson was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for both films. Nicholson was friends with the director long before the death of Polanski's wife, Sharon Tate, at the hands of the Manson Family, and supported him in the days following the deaths.  After Tate's death, Nicholson began sleeping with a hammer under his pillow, and took breaks from work to attend the Manson trial.  It was at Nicholson's home where the statutory rape case for which Polanski was arrested occurred.

He starred in The Who's Tommy (1975), directed by Ken Russell, and Michelangelo Antonioni's The Passenger (1975).

An American icon

Nicholson earned his first Best Actor Oscar for portraying Randle P. McMurphy in the movie adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, directed by Miloš Forman in 1975. His Oscar was matched when Louise Fletcher received the Best Actress Award for her portrayal of Nurse Ratched.

WAYWARD BUS STUCK IN DITCH

Deputy Finds Nude Hippies Asleep in Weeds

BY CHARLES HILLINGER Times Staff Miter

Sheriff's Sgt. Glenn Fisher thought he had come upon a major disaster early Monday [April 22, 1968].
A bus lay in a ditch. Scattered nearby were several nude forms.
As Fisher shined a flashlight at the figures sprawled in the weeds, some of them began to move.
Their wayward hippie bus bogged down in a ditch in Deer Canyon off Pacific Coast Highway, 12 miles south of Oxnard.
The nine young women and five young men awakened by the officer explained the bus went into the ditch quite by accident and they had bedded down for the night in the weeds.
No one was hurt in the mishap, they said.
Sgt. Fisher radioed headquarters the Ventura County Sheriff's Office described the scene and had the bus license checked.
Minutes later (it was 1 a.m.) Fisher was informed the bus had been stolen from San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district 11 days ago.
So, Fisher suggested everybody ought to get dressed, then he radioed for a bus to haul the hippies down to the station.
As the small band was about to leave the canyon, one of the young women, who identified herself as Mary Bruner, said—"Wait, my baby's on the bus." She gathered up her week-old son.
The baby was born, explained the 23-year-old mother; "somewhere along the line while we've been on this bus trip."
The woman was booked on a charge of endangering the life or health of a child. The baby was placed in protective custody at Ventura County General Hospital.
The young mother said she had no address other than the bus, but that her parents live in Madison, Wis.
The self-proclaimed leader of the band of wanderers gave his name as Charles W. Manson.
He was booked on suspicion of grand theft in connection with the theft of the bus. He also was booked on a charge of having a fraudulent driver's license. He carried two, one with the name Manson, the other with the name Charles Maddox, deputies said.
Three others on the bus had fictitious driver's licenses and were booked on that charge. Two of the group were booked for disorderly conduct.
Two of the men and three of the

On April 22, 1968, nine nude hippies were arrested in Ventura County, Manson was one of them. The picture above is Charles Manson’s iconic Ventura County mug shot.

The mug shot later became the cover of Life magazine as well as the cover of the Charles Manson album Lie: The love and terror cult. The same mug shot is also used for t-shirts and other Manson collectibles, even to this day

  • 1978:  One Love Peace Concert takes place

Quote:

The One Love Peace Concert was a large concert held on April 22, 1978 at The National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.

This concert was held during a political civil war in Jamaica between opposing parties Jamaican Labour Party and the People's National Party. The concert came to its peak during Bob Marley & The Wailers' performance of "Jammin'", when Marley joined the hands of political rivals Michael Manley (PNP) and Edward Seaga (JLP).

Concert background

Since he was elected Prime Minister of Jamaica in 1972, Michael Manley pursued a socialist agenda intended to redistribute wealth by nationalizing the country's major export industries. His agenda proved to be financially unsustainable, as his policies deterred foreign investment in Jamaica. Manley was also aggressively opposed by the CIA and American business interests, as had happened to similar reformist governments in Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and multiple other countries throughout the Americas. Beginning in 1974, he was also opposed by the more conservative Edward Seaga of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), and the two politicians hired local gangsters to help them increase their hold on power.

Ironically, the idea for the One Love Peace Concert came from two such gangsters from rival political factions, who happened to be locked up in the same jail cell together and who both wanted to alleviate the violence. Claudius 'Claudie' Massop (JLP) and Aston 'Bucky' Marshall (PNP) decided that the best means to bring the country together was to use music as a uniting factor and organize a major concert. Quickly realizing that Bob Marley, living in exile in London, was a critical element upon which their success depended, Massop flew to London after being released from jail to convince Marley to perform at the event. Marley accepted the invitation, and the concert was Marley’s first performance in Jamaica since the "Smile Jamaica" concert held days after he was shot in 1976.

The impact of the concert

Unfortunately, the event did little to quell the political violence. The event's two organizers, Massop and Marshall were both killed within two years after the concert. Manley’s critics argue that he used his appearance at the concert to demonstrate the bond he shared with the Jamaican sufferahs and Rastafarians. Within a few weeks of his appearance, he called for an election and won with a significant margin, only further escalating the violence between the two major parties. It was not until Bob Marley’s funeral in 1981 that the two political figures met each other in person and once again shook hands.

  • 2013:  Richie Havens dies

Quote:

Richard P. "Richie" Havens (January 21, 1941 – April 22, 2013) was an American folk singer and guitarist.  He is best known for his intense, rhythmic guitar style (often in open tunings), soulful covers of pop and folk songs, and his opening performance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival.

Havens' reputation as a live performer earned him widespread notice. His Woodstock appearance proved to be a major turning point in his career.  As the festival's first performer, he held the crowd for nearly three hours (in part because he was told to perform a lengthy set because many artists were delayed in reaching the festival location), and was called back for several encores. Having run out of tunes, he improvised a song based on the old spiritual "Motherless Child" that became "Freedom". The subsequent Woodstock movie release helped Havens reach a worldwide audience. He also appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival in late August 1969.

On March 20, 2012, Havens announced on his Facebook page that he would stop touring after 45 years, due to health concerns.  On April 22, 2013, Havens died of a heart attack at home in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was 72.

Jack Nicholson: Pot's a 'Curative'

Hollywood legend Jack Nicholson has broken his long silence on marijuana. In an interview with the the Daily Mail, the 73-year-old Nicholson says he still smokes pot:

Jack NicholsonJack Nicholson - Easy Rider"I don’t tend to say this publicly, but we can see it’s a curative thing. The narcotics industry is also enormous. It funds terrorism and – this is a huge problem in America - fuels the foreign gangs. More than 85% of men incarcerated in America are on drug-related offenses. It costs $40,000 a year for every prisoner.

"If they were really serious about the economy there would be a sensible discussion about legalization."

The three-time Oscar winner who originally became famous for his roles in Easy Rider (see Nicholson holding a joint in the photo above and smoking one in the clip below) and Five Easy Pieces says he doesn't party like he used to. "Contrary to opinion, however sated I got, I always looked after myself," Nicholson explains. "I’ve woken up in trees, I’ve woken up almost hanging off cliffs, but I’ve always known how to sort myself out. I stayed up late, but I slept in late, too. I always believed in taking care of myself. There was always a discipline within my partying structure. I’ve never kept a camera waiting.

"My life has changed," he goes on. "I don’t enjoy the things I used to so much. I don’t go out to nightclubs, I don’t like clubs any more. I don’t go out raging, looking out for women; now it’s just a game that isn’t worth the candle. The last three times I’ve been in New York filming, I didn’t leave my hotel room for one single night. People won’t believe that, but it’s true. But you adjust your life to your circumstances, and I can spend a lot of time on my own. I think of myself as social, but my friends are always telling me, 'Jack, you need to get out more.'"

No, but he starred in Psych Out, Easy Rider, directed The Trip and wrote and produced the psychedelic Monkees movie Head.  Four classic psychedelic/stoner 60's movies.  Then he starred in the movie version of a Ken Kesey book, so I figure he deserves to be recognized.  It would be like if I had a Today in football history thread and recognized Dick Butkus.  He doesn't still play, but he deserves to be recognized for his contribution.
