GT cake dunked using foodsaver
    #16119507 - 04/21/12 09:47 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I recently had 7 BRF cakes fully colonized with GT MS. Spawned 6 of them to coir/verm in foil trays and had one left over.

I tossed around the idea of using a foodsaver vacuum with a container that came with it to dunk the cake. RR advised against the process...noting that it would probably be too water and would drown the myc.

Against this advice, I figured I'll try it with just one cake, and, what the heck...no big loss if doesn't work. I have absolute respect for RR and all of his advice, heck, it's his tek that I used in the cakes, and, if I make any more cakes....will use the standard 24 hr. dunk as he suggested.

I filled the canister with pond water, weighted the cake down, then...put the lid on and vacuumed for a total of 10 seconds. In these 10 seconds hundreds of bubbles came out of the cake. Then took it out and rolled in verm and misted....into the sgfc it went.

Hopefully the pic will come through(my first try posting pic) The pic was taken 10 days after putting in the SGFC. Guess I got lucky.

Nice, sounds like you shaved off 24 hours and had a substantial flush.

I like the pondwater idea..

Was lucky, I guess...I use this canister with the foodsaver to marinate meats....works like a charm. Figured it might work on cakes and there were a couple old posts but nothing that was certain.
Like I said, RR advised against it and I wouldn't try this with a large scale project for fear of killing the myc.
Was pretty cool, though....10 seconds and the cake was soaked.
Maybe I'll try it again with different strain if I have any leftover cakes.
That's one of the things I love about this hobby.....it's not a exact science.

It would defiantly be interesting to see if you could reproduce this success with more cakes.

Got a leftover PE cake that has been full out colonized for a week...was gonna spawn it ...but....gonna give it a try with the foodsaver. I'll post the results (hopefully positive) when or if it fruits.

I am bumping this thread to let you know that I tried the same with a PE cake and another GT ....both failed ...guess they waterlogged. The PE got two bumps on it and some primadora but never fruited. The other cake got nothing but white...no growth after that.

I'm gonna leave them in the FC for another week ..no misting..if nothing, then discard.

It appears that the first cake(in my avatar) was a fluke. It also appears that this RR guy knows his shit. lol

I'm putting the food saver away until deer season, if I do any more cakes, I will do the standard 24 hr. dunk.

:peace:M
