Mad Cow Disease
    #1611422 - 06/05/03 02:43 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Recently i have doing a report on mad cow disease and i started wondering if it could effect some of the magic mushrooms growing in that area of the infected cows and i was wandering it the mushroom could carry the disease from the manure?
Dave

No, I believe that is not possible. A relation between mad cow disease and the human Kreuzfeld-Jacob disease has not been proved to exist, although it is very likely. And if there actually is a relation, the disease can only be transferred from cows to humans by ingesting actual pieces of the cow. The risks seem to be highest with ingestion of cow brains and bone marrow. I have never heard of any risks ingesting cow dung or products derived from cow dung.

i read you can get it from the water contaminated by the cows' urine. who knows? might not be true, but i remember thinking the source i heard it from was reliable.

There's variant CJD which is thought to be the human form of mad cow disease, but I believe that it is only possible to become infected if you have ingested some of the prions which cause the disease. I believe this is only thought possible if you consume the brain or spinal cord.

Much of this insight has come from work on Kuru and its spread through cannabilism in Paua New Guinea. Some info here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/1235525.stm

And information on the link between BSE and vCJD here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/967133.stm

I found this at http://www.ourfood.com/BSE.html

Quote:

The Ministry of Environment of Germany was concerned with the possibility of cattle infection with BSE prions due to pastures contaminated with manure from diseased animals (early 2000). According to professor Georg Pauli from the Robert-Koch Institute in Berlin, there is not such a danger. Sheep which lamb outdoor can deposit infectios placenta on the ground. This material is being ingested by other sheep spreading in this way scrapie. Manure contaminated pastures do not present such danger because the prions are unable to multiplicate or stay infectious over more than several weeks on ground but are not assimilated by plants.

On average 20 people per year die of vCJD in the UK, which considering most of the population of 57 million would have been consuming brain/spinal matter for a number of years represent an extremely small risk. There is no risk whatsoever of contracting vCJD from consuming mushrooms growing on cow dung.
