When casings fail..
    #1611072 - 06/05/03 12:48 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have this casing its been one week since it was incubated and theres zero growth. i'm gonna wait a few days to see if anything happens. i think the problem could have been i thought the casing layer was too dry when it first was made so with distilled water i misted the top layer lightly. i think maybe this could be the reason for no growth its probly too wet.

so anyways i was thinking of scraping off the casing layer and fruiting as a big cake type deal. anything i should do to get best yeilds this way. can you dunk birdseed substrate? or should i be alright just scraping the layer off then birthing as so?

also i don't want the potency effected. like i noticed that pf cakes alone don't yeild as great of potency as would casing. will i endanger my potency as a cake?

Id leave it.

Maybe taking off a little casing... YOu could have applied it too thick.

Birdseed woont do too well by itself. Id keep the casing on there.

its definitely not too thick... if anything its too thin... i had to apply a tad more in some areas where you could see birdseed showing through... its like less than 1/4 inch thick

1/4 inch is perfect. DOnt throw it away or anything! One week and a couple day is nothing! I beleive this is in the fruiting chamber right now? It sometimtes takes up to two weeks to see pin growth .... patience! MIne just started pinning, about 1 week and 1/2 to 2 weeks!

Dont scrape the casing...you might scrape the myc under it, throwing the casing into shock and stalling...this should only be done as a last result if overlay happens. GL

Very likely too wet. What type of casing? Temperature should be at about 80-85F and there should be a *little* CO2 buildup (i.e. fan/mist every other day) and the casing layer should be airy. If there is peat in it, it should be buffered with lime.

If you squeeze it as hard as you can only 1 or 2 drops of water should come out. What does it smell like, and what's it in/how is it covered? If it has not grown through at all it might be best to recase it; a casing sitting around for too long is inviting contaminants, IMO.

Its either too wet, or contaminated. Or you could have a viral infection which causes your mycelium to die back.... If it's too wet, I would try just leaving it exposed to open air for a while until it evaporates, and maybe some scratching to help mix it up. If your looking to do something drastic, I would get a bottle of 10-15% h202 or 1:200 Bleach/water, and alot of rubbing alcohol. Scrape the casing layer off, flip it over and case the other side after spraying the shit out of the whole thing. First one's your best bet though... your substrate probably just got matted down from the wet casing, and scratching it will help it out alot.
