Shroom Gardening-An Adventure in Outdoor Cultivation-Update!
    #1610063 - 06/05/03 12:58 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Summer is here in Lala Land. I decided to convert my vegetable garden into a fungi garden.

My bed started out as an overgrown mess.

I spent 3 hours the other night preparing the soil in the bed. There were old casings and bacterially contaminated casings from the last few months that were mixed into the soil. The soil now is very loose and a mixture of native soil, horse manure compost, and a bit of white millet.

I rigged up some shade, as the direct sunlight would not be good for this type of project. I used weed barrier as a shade cloth. I have a soaker hose to keep the soil moist.

I will update this thread as I progress. Here are some pics of the bed as it looks now.

I will be adding a lattice to the end here and will train vines up the long vertical section. I will do something creative with the rest. I just threw it up tonight. I still have modifications to make to it.

I have it rigged so that I can release the shade cloth to maintain the bed. So far so good.

Enjoy!

Joshua

Hempfest would be cool! I'll have to find out the dates so I can get those days off. You should come down for the Oregon Country Fair, 7/11-13. I plan on getting a camping spot for all three days.

I look forward to talking to you soon.

I just placed an old Pheonix Oyster woodchip block in there, I have some freshly spawned FG and B+, and my old 11x 1/2 pt Brasilian casing.

I spawned a Qt. B+ colonized white millet into a steer manure compost/straw mix. No pasteurization/sterilization of the substrate was done. I laid down a layer of the mix, then the spawn, another layer of the mix, and I cased with non sterilized/paseurized 50/50 +.

I spawned 2 Qt's Florida Gold into horse manure compost in the same manner as above and with the same casing layer.

The old Brazilian casing was placed into a hole as is.

Now for the patience.

I do plan on some more strains/species as well. I will also be planting ground cover such as ivy and herbs.

Looks good! I'm planning to do something similar in my parents' garden with my contaminated and flushes-out cakes. They have a nice patch beneath some oak trees (lots of shade) where nothing else will grow anyway. I figure that with some humidifying in the summer it should work out pretty well. Especially since their neighbour has a horse these days, hence lots of horse manure available! 'Bout one bucket a day, should do for my needs, I suspect

I did not know marigolds were repellants. I'll have to consider those.

Repellent plants.
Aromatic herbs are frequently used as pest repellents. The most common insect-repellent herbs are sage, rosemary, mint, and thyme, which are disliked by many pests including the cabbage butterfly. Sage, rosemary or wormwood planted around your carrot plot will mask the scent of the carrots and make it considerably more difficult for the fly to find them.
African marigolds, have been found to keep eelworm from the roots of potatoes, cucumbers, and other plants. The roots of the marigold are believed to contain a substance that actually kills the pest. Marigolds will also deter the flea beetle, a pest which loves to make holes in the leaves of both vegetable and flowers, especially wallflowers, stocks or alyssum.

This was taken from::::> http://www.organicmattersmag.com/features/what_do_organic_gardeners_do_about_preventing_pests.htm

I would try the wormwood too...

Keep in mind that fungi have been shown to concentrate certain plant products. If I used something such as wormwood I take the risk of having my fungus incorporate and concentrate the wormwood toxin.

The information is well taken. I will read up on it as soon as I get a chance.

I am reconstructing my outdoor bed. I am building a ten inch raised bed with a hoop house on top.

Here are some recent pics.

This is the pre-construct of the new set-up.

Here are the existing patches with mycelium showing through.

Here are some fruits that made a showing. These were not part of the patches I made. They are from remnants from old expired casings that have been mixed into the garden soil from this past Winter. I have no idea what strain they are. I'm happy to see them appear though!

Enjoy!

At this point I am concerned with the critters in my bed...could they be the infamous bed bugs?

I need to irradicate them. As soon as my pins pop up, they eat them!

This pic is from my intentional B+ bed made from straw and store bought compost. Saturday (6/28):

I'll post some more tomorrow when it the light is out. One of these days I'll post a glorious outdoor fruiting.

Here are some pics from this evening.

You can see in some of them how the critters are dining on the caps of the pins. I will be taking care of this soon with the use of diatomaceous earth. I have tried iron phosphate for the slugs, but it hasn't worked too well. I think I know why.

Thank you!

This bastard ate 1.5 of my largest shrooms in a matter of minutes. I have been checking on my bed every hour or so tonight to see what has been eating my goodies. Even though I have been treating the area with iron phosphate, the slugs are unstopped.

These nematodes are total harmless to your crops
and work for a long long time in the right conditions, i used
them for the first time 3 years ago, and havent had to retreat
any areas that were treated back then.
The other good thing about them is that animals eating the dieing
slugs will be unaffected by the nematodes, i dont know if you can buy these in the u.s but i really recommend them for slug/snail control.

Beer traps work well with slugs. You just fill them up with a strong beer and the slugs are lured into the trap and can't get out. Last summer one trap killed about 20 slugs in one night !

I am aware of beer traps. My take on it is that sure, it kills the slugs that find it, but it also is a strong attractant for new slugs to find my yard.

Diatomaceous earth is what I plan on using as it has a wide range in pest control.

"A weird thing happens to slugs when they touch copper?an electrical current courses through them and they sizzle. Very cool. Thin strips of copper chimney/roof flashing or products specifically made for gardens will keep slugs out of the beds and possibly electro-metallically-cute some of the slimers too"

"The primitive plant "horsetail" (Equisitum arvense), which grows wild throughout most of North America, contains sbstances that repel slugs. The recipe for making this solution follows:
Place 1-2 ounces of the dried herb in a pot with a gallon of water. Bring the water to a boil, then simmer for 20 minutes. For extra punch add cayenne peppers to the pot. Cool the solution and strain; Then spray on vulnerable plants. "

"Eggshells work in the same way as diatomaceous earth. Spread crushed eggshells thickly around vulnerable plants."

"Wood ashes act as a barrier to slugs and snails also."

The DE worked. I spread some at the perimeter of my garden last night. This morning there is no sign of slug damage!

I am so happy!!

I may be installing a copper strip along the sides of my raised bed. I think it will look nice and will be functional. I may not though, seeing how well the DE seems to have worked.

After adding the DE (diatomaceous earth) I did not see any slugs in my garden. After a day I had mushrooms to harvest. I harvested ~80 grams of cleaned mushrooms.

Now that I have the pests under control I am ready for a larger grow..

Here are some pics form this evening.

I was just out last night and spawned about 20 gallons of compost and 10 gallons of straw between three patches. A friend and I found a location near a park and made our "Rogue" beds. I hope to have pictures soon of this grow.

Here is a pic of my FG patch.

These following pics are perhaps the best pics I have ever taken. GSAfarmer and another friend have prepared a few outdoor beds. These pics are from two of the beds. The strain is an isolate from Louisiana, the isolation was done by GSAfarmer.

Here you can see a contamination...one of the few good contams. It seems that the compost used had some Pan. subb. mycelium in it. What a beautiful sight!!! Pan. subb's and cubensis growing side by side!

GSAfarmer deserves some props for these pics!!!

Joshua or GSAfarmer, could you elaborate on the patch with all the moss? Is the moss part of the method you're employing, or did it just grow there naturally? Looks excellent! Great pics, as usual Joshua. Peace.

I have a theory, that the moss helps to moderate the humidity under the trees. My friend GSAfarmer has developed a nice outdoor cultivation technique using our native moss. After an outdoor bed is spawned it is covered with water soaked moss. Every 2-3 days the moss is gathered, soaked and replaced.

The moss seems to work very well. It provides moisture, shade and air exchange all at once.

Is The moss your using a single peice? Where can you get fairly large peices of moss, and what kind of moss is best. I have 2-3 foot tufts of gren moss growing on the ground in a nearby forrest.

I believe it is a sphagnum moss.

I suggest cleaning the moss by soaking in a bucket and washing with water. The peices we use are chunks. We just make a nice bed from all of the chunks we gather. We have used moss from the ground and from trees.

what regions in the US can such a venture succeed in? I suppose it depends on the time of year. If the natural conditions in an area are too dry, can the moss technique bring the RH to a suitable level? I'd like to try this.

I bet you could grow in every state with the right modifications at sometime in the year.

I have family from Pheonix, their low the other night was 92 F. I don't think Pheonix would work right now, but perhaps during Winter.

Thanks for logging in!!!

The battle isn't quite over yet. I spread some fresh diatomaceous earth (DE) yesterday. I saw slug damage today. The reason being, the neighbor has been keeping his sprinkler on too long. He is putting down some new turf. The soil in my yard is so wet that it saturates the DE a few hours after I put it down.

On a better note, I went out and scoped out a location for a new bed. It is on a river bank right next to the river. GSAfarmer and I went there last night and prepared three outdoor beds. 1x 10 gallon bed, 2x 5 galllon beds. Any progress will be updated in this thread.

Thank you all for your appreciation!!

Im going to try the moss with a new bed im making. I had been soaking straw and spreading it like you do the peatmoss. It was very time consuming and messy. Thanks alot for the idea josh/gsa. I was thinking of making a 2-3 inch trench around my patch that would be lined with plastic so the DE would not absorb moisture from the ground.

Hey there,

My outside stuff did great last year but this year has been kinda funky. Seemlingly unaware of my intent,  the earth seems to eat everything I put outside. Your friends items look mightly tasty.....maybe I will have a little better luck in September. The slugs seem to have strong radar for cubes...they can spot them from 50 feet it seems.

Best regards,

Hey there,

I made five pints of salsa this year using a mix and some tomatoes and peppers I was growing at the time. The peppers are still growing but the tomatoes have since been replaced by okra on the dripline. I have some extremely hot Red Savina habanero peppers if you want a few.... :sun:.

Man, you can grow anywhere.
I grow outdoor patches with little or no shade at all.
Although you'll only see shrooms in the morning or late night.
This is a good thing since I don't want the neighbors seeing a massive patch of fungi, that just "appeared" overnight.
The trick is to water the hell out of it every other day and to case with straw.
This is how I have a natural Field of fungi in my yard.
We don't mow the lawn till its tall as hell, so when we do there is a shit tons of dead grass that covers the lawn. This protects the underlying mycelium and controls the micro climate for fruiting.
But as soon as they break the straw casing they are fried by the sun.
I remedy this by adding a thick straw layer, that isn't packed too tight.
Ill get some pics here soon.

Great log Joshua!
Nice fruits, keep em coming!!

We checked our beds made on 7/11. Out of three beds, one had a few fruits on it already! We ate them! They appeared to be from isolated fully colonised areas of the bed.

Here are some harvest pics from a Rogue bed in the coastal mountain range.

Hey Joshua, do you find the moss is enough for humidity.  It's been extremely dry up here lately but those are some nice pics
Do you water the patch or put plastic over it or can neglecting it really produce that well.
Thanks - @cro

The patch those pics came from were from a bed in the mountains. The bed was watered once a week. The moss dries up, but offers protection to the substrate from over drying. I imagine you will have to check any bed you make and adjust the watering accordingly. If you are in Seattle I see little difference in our climates. It has been near 100 f for the last 3 days here. I can't recall the last rain we got here, it has been at least several weeks.

GSAfarmer prefers the moss method because it works and camoflages the bed.

I think I prefer using straw or plastic depending on the situation. I find the moss to be a pain in the ass to clean off and think that it carries too many contaminants. The moss could be sterilized to prevent the carrying of contams, but it still takes a while to clean the mushrooms up.

Here are some pics from my outdoor garden. I have covered the bed with 4-5 inches of horticulture gade perlite. My soil does not drain well, so the perlite will aid in drainage. I plan on mixing it into the soil after my project is done to condition the soil for better drainage. I then covered the perlite with weed barrier fabric. This is to seperate the perlite from my substrate. The fabric allows gas/moisture exchange. It should also act as a barrier to insects and of course weeds.

I will now work on getting enough spawn for the bed.

Enjoy!

Joshua

Hey there,

What exactly is a "rogue" bed? Is that like a wild thing?! Also, what is a GSAfarmer? I saw a website a while back that had that same thing but they were a bunch of ganga heads or wild growers that smoked using a gas mask.  I have a key for a lock on a camera lens case that says GSA on it. Is that the same thing?

Best regards,

GSAfarmer is the user name of a friend who visits this site. GSA stands for Ganja Smoking Association. He is a Ganja head. I pass out every time I smoke at his place. I'm a ganja light weight, but a shroom heavy weight!

Rogue : a mischievous person

I recall a recent concert in which a local brewery, Rogue, was selling beer. I inquired where they were located. They told me a certain city that confused me. There is a Rogue river in my local, I thought they would be near it. However, I was told their actual location, and in response to my confusion the girl said, "Rogue is a way of life".

Making wild mushroom beds of this type may be considered mischievious.

I thought the name was catchy. I even obtained a Tyvek type material with the Rogue brewery logo on it.

Later this fall or early spring, I will make 3 or 4 outdoor beds. I am going to try morel, king stropharia and one or two more species. I am also going to lean shittake logs against the fence. The garden gets at least 12 hours of sunlight a day; it can really bake the moisture out of the soil back there. I have yet to figure out if I will artificially shade the fungus garden or plant my veggies in the fungus garden.

Thanks @cro, here are some more pics.

These are of Transkei.

These are from a patch Shroominsmurf and I started on 7/26. The strain is USVI. 15 gallons horse dung compost was spawned with 8 Qt's white millet.

It looks like my allowance has reached its limit.

Enjoy!

It has been in the high 80's to 90's for the last month here. Today was only 80 or so. I am going to make one more bed soon of KS. I checked out the average temps and I should be able to grow through the end of September (my fingers are crossed) as the temps are close to what they average in June. A friend started a bed in June with good success.

Here are some pics that Shroominsmurf took of our outdoor bed. Some of the pics are a bit out of focus due to a setting on my cam that he did not know about. Digital cameras can be tricky to use, especially when you have never used a particular model before.

I think this picture is pretty awesome, good job Shroominsmurf!

It would be unfair to the other users if I had a higher allowance. In the Website announcements and feedback forum there is a thread discussing the introduction of a premium member status for those who pay dues to the site. I encourage all of you to leave feedback in that thread. If the admins get enough feedback it may be possible for all of us to have an increased allowance by paying dues to the Shroomery.

You can get it at any good garden shop. It is like little glass shards of fossilized sea creatures. It is like walking barefoot across broken glass for the slugs. I just have to say that growing outdoors is the best. It just keeps growing and going and going. Got great yields on a 2ft by 2ft patch. Every one that hasnt tried outdoors yet should save a couple of jars over the winter for next spring, you wont be sorrey.

I plan to try a bigger outdoor bed next summer....I burried a contamed cake about a month ago....it fruited some damn potent eqs(Tho they were small)...best part was the contam completely cleared up....just like I've heard they will outdoors...don't know why it works but it does

EDIT: oh and btw I got 3 slugs on this patch before it fruited and I've never even seen a slug in my area before this......so I'm gonna get me some of that stuff for next summer....no slugs were around once they fruited tho I got lucky

I harvested the first couple of fruits from my bed. 22 days from spawning to first harvest. You can see where the left side of the bed was in the shade. The shaded half of the bed is fruiting. I am working on some more shade for the rest of the bed.

Enjoy!

I hope you have taken into account that the fungi may concentrate any chemicals you add to or around your bed.

The DE is non-toxic, non-poisoness...and tastes great with a light but refreshing aftertaste.

i actually did take it into account. but i dont think that there's enough of the spray to even soak into the ground, i have a light layer of leaves and dried roots over the top of it as well so i think that catches most of the spray any way

This was taken from::::> http://www.organicmattersmag.com/features/what_do_organic_gardeners_do_about_preventing_pests.htm

I would try the wormwood too...

Hey whats the temps at where u are right now? Do you have any way of keeping them warmer than the outside air? It seems that soon it will be too cold for outdoor beds in the pac northwest, or maybe im missing somthing?

The temp in my garden is 44.2 F right now...a bit chilli. Currently I have a greenhouse over my raised bed. I will let these cubes flush as long as I can and then I'm going to prepare a woodlovers patch. I'll probably try azures, cyans, or maybe I'll cultivate an unknown specie I picked this spring....hey, I might even try a huge patch of oysters or Shiitake.

I'm new here and this is right up my alley. I just purchased some "psilocybe tampanensis (origin Florida)" and I was told that they could be grown successfully outdoors. Especially here in Florida. Where can I find the tek for this project. If it works, I'll be sure to post the pix.

To make an outdoor bed one must have spawn, substrate, and a shovel. I start by digging a shallow area in which I wish to lay my bed. It is usually 8 inches deep. I then lay down a layer of substrate. I prefer horse manure compost, but just about any proper substrate will work (straw (pre-soaked is best), cow manure, organic compost, woodchips, etc.) I then mix in part of my spawn. Fresh spawn is best, but old subsrate also works. I continue to layer the substrate/spawn untill I have used all of my supply up. If using grains of any kind, I suggest adding a layer of substrate only to the top of the bed. This may keep critters from invading your bed as a source of food.

Here is what I did for my custom outdoor set-up.

I constructed a raised bed using 1x8 (really 1.something x 6.something). I painted the boards to prevent pre-mature decomposition. I constructed a hoop-style greenhouse frame to fit into the bed. I used 3/4 inch? PVC pipe. I covered the frame with plastic sheeting. The back side of the greenhouse was covered with black plastic. This was done for two reasons, 1) It blocked my neighbors from viewing my project 2) It acts as a solar heater for the greenhouse. When sunlight hits the black plastic it creates heat which is then trapped by the greenhouse. i figure this will allow me an extended growing season for my projects.

I filled the bed with about 4-6 inches of horticulture grade perlite. This is to aid in both drainage and aeriation.

I then covered the perlite with weed barrier cloth. This materal allows for moisture and gas exchange and will provide a separation between my substrate and perlite.

I then added my substrate/spawn as described earlier. I should have created shade for my set-up, as the shaded portion of the bed colonised faster and fruited first.

Here's a pic from a couple of weeks ago. You can see that the shaded portion fruited first.

Enjoy!

Joshua

Another bed was checked over the weekend. It was spawned 4 weeks ago and is fruiting w/ KS. Pics to come as soon as my allowance replenishes.

That looks great. I gotta quit making crappy beds and do one up like yours. Do ya think that if I made it up greenhouse style, it would fruit all winter long down here in Georgia?

 Great start to a new year.
Too bad they'll be crackin down hard now for the rest of it.  :frown:
And to think if the cops had been civil in the first place none of that would have happened.  Pepper spray just to break up a party, of course people are going to be pissed and ignite something like that scene.
Anyways, it was fun to watch.

Just a little more OT
Yeah, the pepper spray actually made it in today's paper, which I'm surprised, but according to the paper the police trying to break up the party were scared for their lives and had to use pepper spray as they fled. LOL

Anyways, yeah, you've got to check out the new place. Big house, pool table, DJ booth, and of course the kegerator. If this weather ever decides to turn into fall, we should be picking in a couple weeks, IF.

Back on topic - "The first flush from both sides yeilded about 10 oz's dry." That's insane, do you find the outdoors don't lose the full 90% water weight? They look incredibly meaty.

Here are some pics from my outdoor KS bed. It was spawned on the 1st of September. This first set of pics was taken on the 27th of September.

This bed was prepared with 15 gallons of horse manure and about 12 quarts of white millet spawn. I covered it with maple leaves, which seems to work very well.

These next pics were taken on the 30th.

The first thing I noticed was that a creature had dined on my fruits. There was probably a confused deer out there somewhere.

Damn!! I ran out of upload bytes. I have a wonderful picture of about 20 pins all grouped together, you can see them in the bottom right of the last pic. I guess I'll start my next post with that pic.

Enjoy!!!

They're not quite the three footers I had imagined, but I am very pleased nonetheless. I do hope more people will learn to cultivate in any manner, whether it's outdoors or indoors.

Dude, this is just plain silly. Ive never seen shrooms so large and plentiful, not only in person, but on the internet either. What was the total dry weight on ALL of your outdoor beds, like 100 pounds?!?

All together I'd say about 20 wet lbs have been picked by me over the Summer.

Here are some pics from 10/10. These are some of the last you will probably see of this specie from my outdoor projects.

Enjoy!

Current conditions in my garden are 72F and 80% humidity and rising (just watered).

wow, i've only looked this thread in the beginning before any pin and now BOOM!!!
how amazing job josh! must be very fun to undertake it! =)
it's also nice to see brazilian fungi growing in US territory...
the take over begins!!! it was our military strategy anyways to break into US.
sooner or later, after eating such mushrooms people will become all cucarachos-like and will start listening to samba and to be laaazy assed persons like the average brazilians...
then lula is going to assume the charge of president of the united states of america.

Or it could work the other way around. The Brasilians will see what a cool American guy I am and start to adopt some of the better American qualities I have. They will then return to Brasil where they will spread wonderful ideas and make make Brasil more Joshua-like...

...damn!!! either way I am scared!

huauhahuahuahuahuahua
it would be lovely if the brazilians had the same blue thumb as you!
one of these days i saw a BR shroom forum, the picture section is a pity. =)

don't be scared friend, you're the proud father of perfect fungi and a great knowledge spreader, which are very nobel qualities. i'm sure many people in many countries grow better and better because of you, or stimulated by you (or other fellows). =)

i'd get scared if the azure patch starts to munch on the wooden fence or the surrounding houses, i wouldn't doubt that!

this is why i love the shroomery. here people SHARE information, on other forums it doesn't seems to happen so easily. keep on pumping!

So study up and prepare your beds, ???Cause el shrooms!!!! :wexican:

And a pic to show how cold my set-up got over the winter.

One would pre-dry with a box fan outdoors and crisp up with a dehydrator indoors and or desicant.

There are a lot of factors involved. In a lab I imagine it can survive near freezing temps.

The problem is that in the wild other organisms will use the cubensis mycelium as their own substrate. So in effect it is not the temps that kill it but the other organisms that flourish at lower temps.
