Grain jars possibly stalled
    #16098648 - 04/16/12 06:02 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

This is my second attempt at grain and at 75% colonization i shook the jars and now it has recolonized the grain but i for some reason can't get the grain on the bottom of the jars to colonize has anyone else had this problem? i could post pics to show what i mean if that would help thanks.

Could be lack of gas exchange, dried out grains, or a contam.
How long have they been stalled?

Maybe bacteria. The myc looks weak, shake 'em again either way, nothing to lose at this point.

only a couple days it seems to have slowed down and the one jar looks kinda weak because i shook it a couple days ago so it slowly re colonizing. I'm just wondering what I'm doing wrong this is the second attempt with grain and the last batch stalled also i got two 1/4" holes in lid with poly fill in and there seems to be moister still in jars. it just for some reason never colonizes on the bottom i want to find out what I'm doing wrong before i attempt to do some more jars super frustrating almost wants me to go back to brf and verm but when grain works it seems so much more efficient

moisture is fine. Give it another week and if it hasn't moved, then you can worry. Use a crayon and outline where the mycelium is today. IME it grows at a rate of around 1/2 inch per day (or less)

I'd guess it's too moist at the bottom.

I wouldn't shake again.  No point really when the myc only has a half inch to go.  It will just bruise it up and slow it down even more.

Give it a week before you worry.

So heres the deal this is how the jars look since the last time i posted they kinda look like they may have a con tam now or maybe the jars had too much moister but something isn't right can anyone guide me as to what i did wrong with these jars this is the third attempt with grain and the same thing has happened every time. My best guess is that i had to much moisture in the jars.

Too wet. They tend to really stick to the sides that way and have difficulty getting colonized, even for a lengthy amount of time. They way it's colonized is not healthy at all, not near dense enough. Could be the strain, could be the grain. I can't tell

No need to toss it.

Just use the fully colonized stuff from the top of the jar.  discard the stuff at the bottom.

Assuming you open the jar and it doesn't smell like shit.

Make a little tray.  you can probably get some fruit from it.

looks good to me
no need to toss any of the stuff on the bottom
u can spawn an 80% colonized jar
just up you chance of contams

and before you spawn those bad boys i would shake them up to distribute the moisture
then give a couple more days and they should colonize the whole way

Pic #2

If that's a tub in tub incubator then I'd bet the bottoms of the jars dried out or became contaminated.

Don't use incubators.

Nah,  that's fine.

slows them down but wouldn't stop the bottom from colonizing.

Your problem seems to be moisture.
