Does using shrooms change your blood sugar levels ?
    #16097852 - 04/16/12 02:45 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Every time I shroom now I experience at the very first onset a light headedness/dizziness/need to lay down. I have been avoiding eating before hand for 5-5 hours or so the last few times cause I had a horrid experience in December sio thought it best to have an empty stomach.I wonder if anyone with diabetes uses shrooms or if in general people knew whether is messes with blood sugar levels. Cause I almost feel like I am going to pass out (and as a result get a bit paniccy) at one point yesterday during my come up.

as far as i know psilocybin doesnt effect liver toxicity or blood sugar level...

iam not a diabetic tho. although i have experienced tingly/numbing fingers and lips also some light headedness and shortness of breath but i think thats my anxiety in short.

I believe it's scientifically proven that psilocin (and its pro-drug psilocybin) causes a change in blood sugar levels. I cannot remember exactly how though and it's highly likely that not eating for 5 or 6 hours has a bad influence on your blood sugar levels. Maybe you should eat a light meal 3 to 4 hours prior to dosing. That way you can make sure there's not too much fluctuation.

As far as I know, the change in blood sugar levels is one of the very few known physical side effects of being under the influence of psilocin.

EDIT: There's a paper from shulgin online that says that rabbits had a slight increase in their blood sugar levels after administration of psilocybin.
Funnily enough, wikipedia states the opposite.

Doesn't not eating cause a dip in blood sugar?

I don't personally have diabetes nor do I know of any information regarding the topic so I can't help you in that regard. Though I usually do make sure that I eat normally, even when I trip.

I recommend making shroom tea. Eat a nice meal. Give it an hour to digest (like before you work out), then drink the tea. You should get little to no stomach discomfort. And then eat normally or as desired. Shrooms and LSD make some people anorexic, but I tend to eat normally throughout and quite enjoy it, unless I take a huge dose and don't know what's going on

This seems to be an issue that is still subject to scientific debate.
Have a look on
scholar.google.com

It seems to be the general consensus that, if there is a change, it's only a slight increase by 10 to 20 percent.

High Blood Sugar Symptoms

A high blood sugar level itself is a symptom of diabetes. However, an individual experiencing hyperglycemia may have no symptoms at all.

Common symptoms can include:

    Dry mouth

    Thirst

    Frequent urination

    Urination during the night

    Blurry vision

    Dry, itchy skin

    Fatigue or drowsiness

    Weight loss

    Increased appetite

If hyperglycemia persists for several hours and leads to dehydration, other symptoms may develop, such as:

    Difficulty breathing

    Dizziness upon standing

    Rapid weight loss

    Increased drowsiness and confusion

    Unconsciousness or coma

I very much appreciate the replies.

The predominant sensation is of light headedness, not quite feeling feint (possibly heading in that direction though) but spaced and hyped and the feeling of need to breathe deep and expand the chest by inhaling deep. (then a little panniccy). Feeling like getting outside would be a good thing, a bit of claustrophobia.

You see I have had absolutely fantastic times on mushrooms with no down sides at all, virtually a wonder drug status in my mind. But the last 6 months have seen a very different feeling (unpleasant) during my come ups. So I have been changing various things to try and get back on track.

A bit of background, I have only ever taken 5-10 lib caps historically at a time (but fairly frequently, say every 2 weeks, like maybe people smoke ganja at weekends) and I adored the gentle mellowness and the euphoria. I thought I had found the perfect medicine to chill with reflect with and enjoy. Up till that point I was mainly drinking the tea and then eating the slimy shrooms after making tea with them as well. But in December I took 15 and had a really bad time, the come up knocked me for 6 and I was dizzy and extremely nauseas for 2 hours which completely spoiled the whole thing I got pannicy and was vomitting/wrteching air for 2 hours, yep nothing came out.

Anyway I have tentatively ventured back and each time even on only 5 lib caps with tea (not eating the actual shrooms themselves since the vomit thing) and the come ups have been very uncomfortable (headwise).

Goes like this... feel tired and know something is due to happen (say 35-45mins) then I lay down or look at a wall to check if anything is happening, then all of a sudden I get very light headed and spaced (but not in a nice way, in a really shortness of breath, hyped anxious way) This time, this is when my heart rate went up as I panniced a bit. After 2-3 mins laying down and relaxing it slowed and I was feeling better. This light headedness is spoiling it. After say 1 hour I get the real mellow chilled tranquilized and pleasant effects and feel really positive and revitalized 2-3 days or more after.

I am determined to get to the bottom of this light headedness pannicy thing. It might well be the long wait without food.I think I will not go extreme with the empty stomach thing and as suggested try eating a smallish meal 2-3 hours before.

I do not have any known existing medical complaints at all and am pretty healthy overall.

Thanks, I appreciate any help getting me back to enjoying the shrooms, cause they can be absolutely impeccable at times. I am up for a bit of light headedness in the mean time while I work through suggestions. (just, pretty yukky feeling to get through, lol).

Any other thoughts are very welcome. : )

I used to fast for about 5-6 hours before tripping and I would have some general weakness in my limbs.  I started eating about 1-2 hours before my trip (not a huge meal but something substantive) and found that these symptoms went away.

I have also read on this site that some wood loving species, such as cyanescens, can contribute to a feeling of weakness and loss of coordination.

Peace!

I have type 1 diabetes and the change of blood sugar happens, even if I microdose my bloodsugar rise a few mmol because my body still needs to broke the enzymes and what not. It releases some kinda sugars that my body has to brake but I do not have to put insulin for it. I prefer to eat and take my insulin 3h earlier before taking shrooms.

But in a healthy individual it truly depends on what you have eaten before or if you have fasted. And ofc the mental state you're at.
