Help! No Pins!
    #1609745 - 06/04/03 11:14 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

A friend of mine has a couple of brf/verm cakes going in a terrarium. Humidity is fine but the temps are running a little high, like 78-80F. The cakes were dunked for 12 hours in the fridge, then double end cased the cakes with verm. Fanning is happening 2-3 times per day and they are exposed to light. I know the temps are not ideal(75F) but without him buying a mini-ac he can't do much about it.
So are the temps affecting pin formation? How long should it be before pins?

Some help from the experts would be appreciated. Thanks.

The temps should not be affecting pin formation to any malleable extent. Everything seems perfect. Although you may want to drop the temp just slightly, its not a big deal. I have my temps set around there. If you cant afford an AC, one easy remedy for high temp is to simply freeze water bottles and put them in teh terrarium. Freeze 4 and use two at once, so you have it interchanging all the time. Works like a charm. GL

As a sorta side note...

What this donkey I know does to keep the temperature down is put an ice pack in the humidifier water once in the morning and once at night - works pretty well, keeps the temperature about 72-78 all the time.

but doesn't work unless you have a humidifier

Thanks a lot. Humidity is at 100 percent. Should he aim for 95 or so? Also I read that instead of using crushed oyster shell in addition to a 50/50 casing mix you can use crushed egg shells. Anyone have any suggestions about that?

I have two casings that are showing no signs of bacterial contamination, but still haven't fruited. During this time, 4 others have been harvested, and 1 is starting it's first flush. I'm about to throw them out to make room for faster moving cakes - but at the advice of some good people here, I'm going to wait another week.
