Anyone know what causes hollow stems?
    #1608936 - 06/04/03 06:21 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

I typed it in but found nothing with search. My Eq's are hollow and one is cracked open along the stem.

Most of the times P. cubensis has hollow stems.

I usually find air exchange to effect mushrooms in this way.

This is my theory, it may not be original.

Mushrooms want to disperse their spores into the air current. If your CO2 is too high the mushrooms will elongate to try to reach the fresh air above. This elongation essentially stretches the stem wall thin. Whereas if you have adequate exchange the fruit does not need to grow as tall, it will have a thicker stem.

I find this to be generally true.

Many, one maily like Johua said is CO2.  My chinchillas grow this time gave it tons of air exchange, fuller fruits!!!!  very nice.  Depends on the strains too.  Temp fluctuations too.

hollow stipes are pretty much a feature of cubes in general, except in the freakier races, eg PF, Plantasia, PR sometimes...
B+ seems to produce particularly hollow stipes in my experience...

i think you are talking about this:

but i highly doubt you need one of those unless you are building a laminar flow hood.

in your case, you'd prolly want one of these 12Vdc, 25 cfm:

I always wondered but was unable to obtain a definitive answer:

Is it stipe, stalk or stem? Or can they be used interchangeably?

I believe the preference would be stipe (scientific term)>stem (laymans term)>stalk (improper term IMO). The first two are more acceptable, the last is not.

i had a batch of stropharia once that was very hollow,
it dried to almost nothing, little string-like 'stipes' and a cap. from what we can tell, it happens from time to time and doesn't seem to be specifically correlated with any environmental factor, some say it's heat, others air, but my observations were that it still occurs even under optimum conditions, i suspect genetics is the most relevant factor.

2nd and 3rd flushed give bigger fruits, but hollower stems..

a minor observation, your mileage may vary!????

Yeah....I'll be trying that too! Just to see!....But I too(like poops) have found that my friends 1st flush is fine and the 2nd and 3rd have hollower stipes. It seems to get worse with more flushes...I wonder if it has something to do with depleted nutrients as well. (on B+)

My kids own grown shrooms have solid stems. The kids got the spores from a wild shroom that they made prints from. So did the kids just luck up?

not really.
my experiments and others show that so-called solid [there's still a hollow center barely visible] ones are much more common than hollow ones. i grew many batches of several strains before i ever got any hollow ones at all.

i believe joshua's argument wholeheartedly because the foaf has fruited in a small styrofoam cooler with fanning once or so a day, and the bigger they got the faster they grew (up with very hollow stems.) so im guessing the tall ones are there in a chamber because of high CO2 but in nature they ALL will have thick stems and short, becuase (im assuming) of the consistent air exchange. the foaf also tried throwing a casing inside an open topped box, and 2 shrooms grew fine on second flush, but from the side where rh was higher, and as soon as they were an inch above the sub they just got a litle fatter then stopped growing (this was in a room with around 30%rh) upon examination they were seemingly rock hard because of the dry air, the caps never opened and when they were cut open, they were damn near solid, the diameter was about a half inch when growing and barely shrunk at all because of the solid stipe. air exhange makes an difference IMHO.
