problem with mirro PC can anyone help?
    #1608904 - 06/04/03 08:12 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

background: Mirro Wearever 12qt pressure/speed cooker

ok so my pressure cooker arrived, and I decided to give it a whirl. Put some water in, let it heat up

I checked back on it, and there's steam shooting out the handle. It looks to me as if the lift pin isn't closing.

When I take the lid off, and put it back on (while the water is still quite hot) the lift pin goes up, I can see the little lock lever in the handle come down, but I'm unable to turn the pot to close it. When I force it to turn and close, the lift pin falls down, and it's back to square one with steam shooting out the handle. The vent valve is not blocked, and some steam does come out of here, but it is not able to build pressure to 15psi

I have the option of permanently sealing the lift pin, and then just making sure I never take the lid off without letting it cool adequately, but I'd like to try to make it work right, first

Any help?

btw I bought it on ebay, and while it was new and unused, it'd be a hassle to try to get it replaced on warranty from Mirro

Thanks!

I have a 22qt mirro that gives me headaches like that sometimes.

make sure to put some cooking oil on the gasket before you use it

don't put the weight on until you see steam coming out the hole.

Return the beast and get one that works right

In my case it helps if I give the handle a soft clap while the steam is coming out of the pin, then the pin closes. Try it.

thanks guys, I'll try those suggestions!

if these fail, what are the consequences of taking the pin out and welding the hole shut? From what I can see, the only purpose of the pin is to keep people from opening the lid while the pressure is still high. The vent valve and the overpressure valve would remain functioning as designed

I'm a fairly competent welder, so properly sealing the lift pin hole shouldn't be a problem

>the only purpose of the pin is to keep people from opening the lid while the pressure is still high.

And
1. it releases the air that is in the PC before it closes
2. it acts as an additional overpressure security vent

ok I fixed the problem and I'm going to post the reply so others can search for help and find it...

I took out the lift pin and soaked the seal in vegetable oil

Also at the recommendation of someone in #cooking on efnet, I let the steam start shooting out the vent valve for a few minutes without the weight on
then I put the weight on and it started coming out the handle slight.
A few taps, recommended by anno, and now it's working!

Thanks for the help everyone
