6L Tefal/Tescoma Pressure Cooker help please.
    #16078815 - 04/12/12 05:17 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I am in Europe. I have been looking at pressure cookers because I want to do some better substrates than PF Tek soon. Instead of ordering online I wouldn’t mind just going to Tesco or its equivalent and buying one. I have been looking around and basically Tefal pressure cooker products seem to dominate.

My plan is to get about 4 x 1 pint jars into a pressure cooker because I use 1 pint jars.

My 1 pint jar is 9 cm diameter (3.5 inches) x 15cm (5.9 inches) high.

I have two concerns.

1) Will a Tefal pressure cooker do the job of sterilizing most advanced shroom cultivation type substrates we learn about on here? Or are they crap?

2) Will the jars fit into a Tefal pressure cooker? I know pressure cookers require liquid at the bottom. I also know in these teks we raise the jars out of the water. So I don’t know if 1 pint jars will fit into these pressure cookers with a tek method or even if these pressure cookers models are any good.

The tefal models are here. http://www.tefal.co.uk/All+Products/Cookware/Pressure+cookers/pressure-cookers.htm

The Secure 5 pressure cooker is a 6L capacity. The Clipso is also a 6L capacity.

Does anyone use 6L Tefal or can help me with some advice.

Thank you.

I downloaded the instructions and can't find the full dimensions or the working pressure.  You might want to email them for this information.

Thanks for the move RR. I wasn't sure where this should go.

Yeah RTR I am pretty lost about that too. I will probably try to email about this.

Can't find the dimentions for this PC either. Pretty pricy at ~£100.

Four such jars will hold ~ 1500g (hydrated) WBS, per PC run.
Each jar holds enough spawn for two-three G/G transfers plus one 21cm bucket>

Yeah, pressure is a definite must know. At 15 PSI, you have to cook your grains for at least 90 mins. If the pressure is lower, you have to increase cooking time which uses up more energy from your stove. I would definitely write the Mfg and ask before buying.

Thanks. However the link is to a 5l not a 6l. Is this right?

Apart from the Tefal there is another brand next to it.

It is called a Tescoma Presto 6 Litre Pressure Cooker.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tescoma-Presto-Litre-Pressure-Cooker/dp/B00548TK04/ref=sr_1_10?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1334293439&sr=1-10

I can get it for half the price shown there on amazon though.

The main site is here http://www1.tescoma.com/en/scripts/katalog.php?gid=2130012000&id=701506

Instructions are here. http://www1.tescoma.com/manuals/701504_10_manual.pdf

page 2 of the instructions says "* OPERATING PRESSURES IN THE PRESTO PRESSURE COOKER
The operating pressure in the vessel is 0.65 bar when cooking at low pressure.
The operating pressure in the vessel is 1.05 bar when cooking at high pressure."

1.05 bars = 15.29 pounds per square inch.

I know I should be selecting 15 PSI for mycological work so it seems to me this model and brand of pc meets the requirements in my questions. Any advise is welcome. I probably plan to get this model.

A little more of an update here.

The Tefal Clipso here... http://www.tefal.co.uk/All+Products/Cookware/Pressure+cookers/Products/Jamie+Oliver+Clipso/Jamie+Oliver+Clipso.htm

Has 1.2 Bars written on the lid.

1.2 bar = 17.40 psi

Well above 15 psi needed for shroom substrate work.

I don't know what the Tefal Secure 5 pressure cooker model has yet.

You are getting close

Now just make certain it is big enough to put an inch or so of water a rack and your jars in it.

You know here is a question.

For PF Tek I just use jar lids at the bottom and foil over them. The bottom of my 1 pint jars are sort of in the water. Do you think thats ok also for pc? To do it that way too and not use the rack that comes with the pc?

I like to keep them out of the water but I'm sure it's not a problem.  unless they get tossed around from the action.

Yeah I suppose I could try and keep them as much out of the water as possible but I know these pc's have a minimal liquid level and I believe with 1 pint jars there is a good probability that the bottom of the jars are going to be in the liquid. Still glass has a high melting point and I think the idea is to get them away from the base of the pot as much as possible, not that they can't be in the water some. The steam is probably just as hot.

It's not the melting point of glass that's the issue but the heating and caramelizing of the substrate.  And of course breaking of the glass if heated cooled to quickly.

You got it. That's it. Yeah the substrate caramelizing. I think as long as the glass is up off the steel pot's base and there is something between it and that then I think it can stay in the water somewhat. For PF tek it doesn't seem to effect the substrate when I do it but PC's are hotter.

This will do the job in hand . Its a high dome so your jars will fit easy and its stupid money compared to the tefal . Also comes with a life time guarantee

They are good quality. The one I have(5L)was given to me ~six years years ago by a friend who herself had used it for many years.
I'm still using the same gasket she gave me with it.
I'd be interested to know how the dimensions differ between the two.
The 5L measures ~5.1/2" deep 8.1/2" diameter internally.
