About to buy my first gun, had some questions.

Finally moved out of NY, and the first thing I want to do is get armed!
I want a low cal. pistol so I can shoot it off a lot without spending too much money. And because handguns are badass.
I have heard many good things about Glocks, so I was thinking about getting a Glock 17.
I heard (on the internet) that the best Glock models are the 9mm ones. Is this true?
Any other guns that you would suggest? Things I should know before I walk into the store?

Springfield XD subcompact 9mm
Or, if you want something smaller
Smith & Wesson Bodyguard .380
9mm ammo is going to be a couple dollars cheaper though.

Why subcompact? just for carrying it around? Aren't guns with shorter barrels less accurate?
Also, I know nothing about guns, could you tell me what makes one pistol better than another?

You mean .357 SIG, which is just a necked down .40S&W.

The ones I previously listed are more for concealment.
I just bought a Smith & Wesson M&P .40 cal. I highly reccommend it. Also available in 9mm for cheaper shooting.

Yes, you do.
No glock is chambered in a rimmed cartridge like a .357 magnum.

Best first pistol, or gun? Ruger mark |||. It's a 22lr so it's cheap to shoot. And it will build correct fundamentals because of the low kick And hell even cost.

I carry a Glock 30, and I wouldn't get rid of it. .45 ACP

I have a Beretta 92fs with a conversion kit. You can shoot it in .22 long rifle "mode" all day long for under twenty bucks(at least 500 rounds) This will also teach you the basics of handling your pistol and fundamentals of shooting without costing you an arm and a leg. You just remove the conversion kit and can shoot the 9mm ammo when you don't mind spending more cash or when using it for home/self defense.
