What do you live for? (SERIOUS PLEASE)
    #1607341 - 06/04/03 07:45 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Well? Why do you guys go on? Why not just kill yourself? everyone list the most important thing to them (that keeps them going)...

I dont know what it is for me personally (which is why i made this to maybe get a better idea)...so right now ill say that i go on for what the future COULD be (i dont believe in fate)...

I like living, life is the most important thing to me. I mean there are so many things to enjoy, so many possibilities that the future holds, it's a banquet and I haven't even finished tasting the appetizers.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Because my death would cause suffering to those I care about.

No one knows the worth of innocence till he knows it is gone forever, and that money can't buy it back. Not the saint, but the sinner that repenteth, is he to whom the full length and breadth, and height and depth, of life's meaning is revealed. Good and evil loose all objective meaning and are seen as equally necessary and contrasting elements in the masterpiece that is the universe.

Yup, this is the exact same question I posted in a thread a while ago:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=support&Number=1421156&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&fpart=all&vc=1

Here's the relevant extract from that post
------------------------
So, I'm curious... have any of you, people of the shroom, *truely* considered why u live on ? and I mean *truely* considered (i.e. sat down and contemplated about it, not just a cursory reflection). And I don't mean answers like "well I'm looking forward to the future, graduation, sex etc"... I mean contemplated it deaper than that. After all death implies nothingness... no experience... hence I don't get the whole concept of fear of death... how could one be afraid of "not experiencing" something ? that would be akin to me telling u: "I know of an experience, called A, but btw, 'I know for a fact that you will never experience A, regardless of whether it's good or bad'" - it wouldn't make sense to get frightened over that
would it ? I realize many people live on because of family etc, and I'm wondering if there are other reasons (one could be happy and still contemplate the possibility of nonexistance) ? or does it come down to "well, there isn't really a reason"... "it's just because...", like the usual "why did u climb the mountain ?... because it was there..."
------------------------

I didn't get too many answers.
I'm not sure why I go on living. There was a time when I would have given
the same answer as Evolving did. But not anymore. Now I think I just live
on because my death would cause grief to loved ones. This is a terrible
feeling, since I think there should be a better reason to live (ala what Evolving
said), but I just can't adopt that mind set (I wish I could). I'm not being negative,
just honest. It's the way I feel right now, and saying otherwise would be
deluding myself. But I hope that someday I'll "realize" something (which
is dif from understanding) that will bring me peace and fulfillment.
And if that happens I hope I'll be able to share it with others

Theres very little to live for!

The psychedelics experience is one, and the possiblilty of what the future maybe become are the only things i see fit to continue living for!

I started living, so I wouldent mind finding out if there's a reason for that, but aside from that, to have fun, and to contribute to this giant love factory that is the universe.

Knowledge, and the pursuit of more knowledge, keeps me going through the days.

it seems to me like the fear of death is rooted more in the fact that when you're dead, you're consciousness is not here.  so if it's not here, then where is it?  does it even exist past death?

*shudder*    :smirk:

why do i keep living?
i can't say right now.
i honestly ask myself that question in some form or another every day.

Music. Hearing it and creating it and collaborating with others for it and going crazy for the sake of it. And this translates over to an apprecition of nature. It's wonderful, music. And art. What we do to make money and sustain and all that bullshit is not who we are. Music and art, and science and the pursuit of knowledge, becuse these are arts as well. All the rest is bullshit. Music is better than sex.

i have to agree with evolving...

and the fact that my life already hasnt been the most beautiful series of events... Maybe one day i will have the life i enjoy... not better homes bullshit or anything like that. I hope... one day maybe i will see a world turned around... I will do all i can to get it that way... if i cant i will know at least i tried. Maybe i will help a few people on the way. To hope that maybe one day i can free other people by some way in their life. There is a lot of suffering out there... a lot of people who dont know anything other than their own misery.

change the world. change myself. change others. hopefully all for the best of all.

>consciousness is not here. so if it's not here, then where is it?
this implies that consciousness has a physical presence.
My take is that consciousness is neither here nor there... it just is...
and when we die, it just isn't - i.e. it ceases to exist.

I live because it feels good. It feels good to be alive and breathe and think. It feels good to be able to soak up everything around me and smile at the wonder of it all. This universe is amazing and to be able to witness it is even more so. That is why its good to be alive.

I have read NDE's[near death experience] of people who say they were in the presence of a powerful bright white light(they say it was god) that emanted the best feeling ever, they say its unconditional love that they felt, and that it communicated to them that the meaning of life is to learn as much as possible, and the purpose of life is to love, help your fellow man, treat him as you would yourself. I believe we are here being tested on our love everyday.

example:
Quote:

Because my death would cause suffering to those I care about. --nubious

in other words..LOVE keeps nubious around, good man nubious. I believe love and knowledge are why we are here. Love is all there is, everything else is just reaching out for it(try and prove this wrong). why do you think all of you chill out here at the shroomery?...you know you love this place, its the bomb, everybody is the shit, all peaceful, no haters(not that i seen and if there are any im sure their dealt with properly)

imho

I live for that next moment when I will be free of all distractions and fears to experience an unscathed and utterly beautiful reality.

That, and rock music.
