stop casings from contaminating
    #1607517 - 06/04/03 12:05 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

how could someone keep contamination out of casings after their initial flush? terrarium lids must be opened in order to fan the casings and to harvest.....this also lets in airborne contaminants that usually show up (dark blue-green) right after the first flush and quickly over populate the casings.

spray diluted h2o2 in between flushes and whenever the casing begins to dry out.

just curious......how many flushes do most people go through before trashing a casing?

depends. If it's straight brf cakes and simple 50/50 then two-three maybe four (depends on amount of substrate) if you spawned on dung or compost, then that number could be around 5, 6, 7...?? again all depends on amount of nutrients

Sorry to steal this post, but I have a question here. I had two jars of substrate PC'd and everything, but I didn't have enough in the syringe to innoculate them, so I dumped them in with my casing before I added the casing layer. This completely filled a 12X9 pan. Assuming no contams, how many flushes will the added substrate give me? It's BRF and Verm for the substrate, Jiffy mix for the casing layer.

It should be pretty good Bet.  The added BRF is good for the myc because its extra food.  Although its probably more prone to contam now...it should work perfectly if it works if you get my flow!

dark-blue/greenish isint contamination, its your myc. bruising... you pick your flush and in the process bruise the myc in the casing layer.. hence causeing a dark-blue ALMOST green color...

contamination looks GREEN.. no blue to it at all.... it starts as a hard white myc (it look much diffrent than mushy myc.. it looks like a white hard crust.... then turns GREEN...

your casings are probably ok.....
i dont run into contamination untill atleast the 3rd or 4th flush.. and my room is filthy...

thanks for the replies.

hyper_dermic - im sure what is present is contamination. it's identical to green mold from "http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23418". it definately takes over the casings and fruits. i guess i should've said a dark green or aqua in color.

it's only been spotted on the casings and not on whole cakes (this didn't occur to me until last night) so i'm thinking the problem is how the 50/50 casing mix is stored. after the first flush, more casing mix is added to the freshly harvested casings, and a few days later the green mold rears it's ugly ass, yet the cakes stay clean. hmmmm.

im curious.....how much "extra" casing mix do others make up and how do you store it for future use?
