P. subaeruginosa? please help me ID this mushroom: Tasmania
    #16071958 - 04/10/12 07:13 PM (12 years, 8 days ago)

Hi everyone, this is my first post but been reading this forum now for a couple of years!
I've been curious about mushroom hunting for a few years now and i'd decided to go for a little hunt this year for something. I found a batch of mushrooms and pins in a small 1m area in woodchips and everything says to me atleast that they are Psilocybe subaeruginosa.
Id appreciate if someone can confirm.

Habitat: Wood. I found them in a woodchipped area in a garden bed. The general area I located them in is south Tasmania, Australia

Gills: Yellowish

Stem: Bare. 4-5cm long, white, hollow in the middle yet not brittle

Cap: 3cm wide, tan-brown, smooth but with a relatively large "umbo" in the center

Spore print color: An odd brown colour, i can swear in the right light it has a hint of violet in it. look at the pic.

Bruising: I pinched a stem on one of the mushrooms with a fair amount of force but i was surprised how long it took to show a colour change, there was no immedient change. I come back to the same mushroom 2 hours later and where i pinched it turned a blue/black hue, is this normal? I hope the photo helps.

Other information: The mushrooms definitely have a very earthy smell and really the only thing that concerns me is the colour of the stem after i tried to bruise it and the spore print. I've also got a feeling that i have more then one type of mushroom growing in this patch.

If you need me to clarify anything just let me know, i'm new to this :P
Thanks in advance!

Most of these photos are taken at random at the clusters of mushrooms but they are all within close proximity.

The above is the mushroom I pinched to test bruising, but took over 30mins to change colour. Is that the right blue?

Yeah, thanks for the confirmation. I was almost certain that they were Subs and thanks for the positive comments on my first post :P

But is it normal for the blue stain to appear an hour or so after a bruise test? I just don't recall hearing that anywhere it just doesn't seem right. As for the spore print, if you guys think its purple-brown, ill take your word for it, I think i'm a little colorblind lol

Definately P. subaeruginosa.  Good job, glad to see someone doing some research before their first post.

As for the bruising it can definately occur that quickly.  You'll often find them with bruising already present also.

Edit: ....and damn they sure is purdy lookin'  :mushroom2:

Nice Find.  And, first pics of these posted here for this tassie season.

They all look good.  As mentioned just make sure they all turn blue on bruising.

And, yes, awesome first post.

Obtuse.
