WBS Jar tops stalled?
    #1606627 - 06/04/03 01:26 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

My friend inoculated some quart jars (with filter discs)and
they are all almost 100% colonized except for the very top. It has been 2 weeks.

He shook the jars 3-4 times durring the 2 weeks to help get the colonization going.

He can see the mycelium trying to creep up and over the top, but he is wondering how long its going to take and if something is wrong?

I know flipping is done to BRF jars to promote gas exchange, and allow excess water condensation to drip out the bottom. Would my friend be better off flipping the jars in hopes some moisture would help out the potentially dried out tops of the jars?

Thanks!

What kind of filter disks are you using? Do the jars smell bad?

If it was lack of gas exchange it would most likely stall on the bottom, farthest away from the source of air. Maybe the opposite, though, if too much water is evaporating from the top through the filter disk.

My friend is using sythetic filter discs from MycoSupply.com. In addition to that, he has coffee filters on top, held on with rubber bands.

I suspect that just the top section is a little dry, and the mycelium is having a rough time colonizing the seed.

What can he do?

If you're using the whole jar lid's area as the filter you could try just making a hole in it (maybe 1/2" diameter) next time and limit the evaporation rate. I'd say shake it, but if everything else is *fully* colonized, I'd just take ALL of the uncolonized part out and case it. Not much of a way you'll be able to rehydrate it at this point, but it shouldn't be a big deal; just make sure you gave the majority of it that is colonized enough time.

I remember seeing an experiment with filter disks (probably Anno) that concluded Tyvek filters don't promote nearly as much gas exchange as polyfil. So, if you use the disks and only make a small hole that might not be enough. Maybe the problem is that there was not enough water in the jar from the onset to keep the momenum of growth going? Just a thought....good luck

thanks for the input guys.... I remember seeing that experiment too houshroom.... these arent tyvek... but a bit thicker filter disc that filters down to .03 or .3 micron (I dont remember which) so I figured it would keep most the moisture in, which it did.

For the most part, everything is colonized except for the very thin top layer on the very top.

So you guys think he should just scoop, or cut out the 1/4inch of un-colonized subtrate on top?
