Geastrum (Earthstar)
    #16061559 - 04/08/12 04:00 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

OK, I still haven't found one of these completely fresh but the other day I found quite a few dry (a bit pass their best but still interesting anyway). A bug is using this as a rest place.

Habitat:

Other pics from the day (Tadpoles!):

I saw some of these earlier but they weren't attached to the ground and I didn't have my camera with me. Pretty cool!

I can just never get over the habitats you hunt. Spectacular.

The habitat I was hunting in when I found these I always forget about as it's off a main road in a very busy village/town.

I wasn't actually on a mushroom hunt that day we just found a foot path going somewhere (the sign said 'nature walk'), we followed it and ended up in some really amazing woods, with a spectacular view at the top. I must have been past them about 50-60 times now and not even noticed.

I've recently been realising that almost everything around here that I walk past is a mushroom habitat of some kind.

Guess what I woke up to today??? RAIN and lots of it!

It would be good to see some of your finds on here! I'd love to find an earthstar in good condition.

I found them only once, in a ruin of a farmhouse.
It took me half a day to find the ruin, after seeing it marked on a map.
When I got there, I was dissapointed, hardly anything was left of the house, only to find 5 real pretty earthstars waiting for me. I was a happy camper.

That's an earwig on the left. The black thing inside is a millipede.

One of my favorite photos I've ever taken was of an earth star! Hopefully you find some nice fresh ones. They are highly photogenic.
