BIG jars
    #1606398 - 06/03/03 11:58 PM (15 years, 25 days ago)

Has anyone ever used real big jars to grow mycelium? I mean like 2 quart jars...

I ask because my ferret has a friend who has a large supply of them. His PC is big enough to handle them, but is wondering how long to cook them and how much spore solution is ideal. Any advice is much appreciated!

I wouldn't attempt it with anything less than grain

Nah, big jars don't seem to work for me. It just takes too damn long for the mycelium to colonize the whole jar under the conditions I can provide, so I switched to (much) smaller jars. They're used for cake fruiting anyways, so big jars would require a large terrarium also...

Big jars are NICE

If you have a pressure cooker that can hold them, I say give them a shot.  As for colonization speed, just overdose it   1/2 gallon canning jars, rye grain, attached with a filter disc and some health agar wedges (or 20cc of a spore syringe) and you should get a colonized jar in under 2 weeks.

Although, if they contam, it all contams.

There's both a good and bad side to it I guess.

Yeah, I can definitaly see that. I ask because, yes mycobags are nice I'm sure, but I already have a LOT of big jars. You suggest rye? Would popcorn or WBS work at all? Yes, I am very fortunate to have a large PC... how long should I PC them for? Is there any way to lessen the chance of contams, like PCing twice?

Thanks for your replies

1/2 gallon jars, PC for an hour and 15 min. to and hour and a half.

Don't cook twice!

Yes, you can do this with rye, millet, WBS, or any grain. Just make sure you have filter discs on the lids. You'll be amazed at the different colonization times without a filter disc.
