Pleurotus ostreatus on fermented straw
    #1603729 - 06/03/03 05:05 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Here are results of a small experiment with fermented straw substrate. A commercial grower told me about this method and he claimed that this gave him best yields.
The straw is submerged in water which is kept at 55C for 24h. During this time heat tolerant organisms come to life and knock out the contaminant organisms that usually compete with mushroom mycellium. The straw is then left to cool down, drained and inoculated with grain spawn.
These pictures are from the first flush. Currently I have the 3rd flush coming and there is still no signs of contaminants. The flushes were not very even, probably because of lighting. Ah hell..., I'm still learning.

Wow!

How do you keep the temperature steady for 24 hours? In the oven?

Have you also try to use this with cubensis?

Keeping the temperature steady for 24h is the real problem with this tek. I used a large covered pot and fine tuned the burner until I got it approximately right. I measured temps with a long submersible termometer. I stirred the straw often because the temp at the bottom went as high as 60C & at the surface as low as 50C.
This method definitely needs refinement, but the initial results were incouraging.
That grower didn't want to reveal any details. He told me only that the temp should be 55C for 24h and that he doesn't add any other organisms to it.
I will try it also with cubensis!

Very nice :-)
I wonder if you could substain 55?C for 24hr using two
metal baths an electric kettle filament with a boiler
thermostat?
Sort of like a two tub water/fishtank heater icubator. But a bit more powerful.
Sounds like an interessting thing though, using good bacteria to
battle the bad :-)

Easier way, do this all in one night though, get a BIG amount and Set your Hottub up to 55, BAM, 24 hours for ya

Yes, but that uses one heat source at the bass, so youll end up with hot spots.
Using the water tub method will even out the heat, and as 55?C is quite a low heat a thermostat will probably be better. If placed inside the straw.

Anyway i'm only thinking of things i have to hand, and a way of doing quite a bit of substrate in one go.:-)I'm sure there are many ways to reach the same results.

Hey Z, what is your incubation chamber like? Those are pretty big bags of straw.... do tell, do tell!

Well, my incubation chamber is not so advanced. It's a sort of improvized home made wannabe Anno's Antonius. 5 metal shelves with nylon walls. One side wall is made of Tyvek for air-exchange - that is probably good for oysters but my cool mist humidifier is having hard time in keeping the humidity high enough.

The bag was about 50cm high at the beginning.

I set my oven on the lowest setting and put a pot with 52?C warm water in it.

After 1 hour the water had 55?C.

Sooo.....right now I?m (not pasteurizing) fermenting my first straw in it.

I know this is the wrong forum, but do you think this might also work for
Panaeolus Cyanescens straw and dung mix?Or should i stick to pasteuriation?
I may try both, but was really only planning one tray this time out.

Ahmmmm...fermented then, I guess.
Pasteurized in the sense that you still kill some low temperature organisms, molds and alike.
But I guess fermentation is more fitting.

I will make more tests too. I will try to prolong the fermentation time & try some other speces.
The thing with this method is that it's also supposed to give better yields then pasteurized straw. At least for Pleurotus species. The organisms that develop during fermentation probably (maybe?) become the food for Pleurotus mycellium or make the straw more digestible.
I think that I read in GGMM that Pleurotus can trap & eat microorganisms like nematodes. Yep, some mushrooms are carnivore.

hello again folks...i am certainly not an expert but i do on occasion brew fruit wine..it is my understanding that the micro beasties eat sugars or starches and excrete CO2+ ethanol mainly....is there any ez of checking for the alcohol?  this 55dgree temp and  conseqent reduction of negative competitors is remarkable! also nothing really exotic or hard to purchase just the fine details of working out a reliable temp constant mechinizm. plz keep me posted.
