Storage of Aspen woodchips
    #16057404 - 04/07/12 03:03 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Greetings all
Well it seems the fungal gods have smiled on me and near where i live the road crews have been chipping aspens and there are several thousand lbs of clean, spring cut chips that are free for the taking but i am wondering how people store their chips. I was figuring i should sun dry them and pile them in a dry shed till i need them but would like to hear about how most folks store their chips. I will be using them for oysters and others during the next few months.

Do as you said.  Get them dry so they don't mold and store them away.  For best results, age them for a full year.  Aspen isn't the best substrate, so hopefully there's some other trees in the mix such as alder, birch, oak, etc.

Thanks for the info, yes there is some birch, maple and a little oak. Just wondering but why does the aging help?
