Agrocybe putaminum lacks the partial veil/annulus on the stipe.

The most obvious difference is that Agrocybe praecox has viel, A. putaminum does not. It can be quite a bit more difficult to separate A. putaminum from some of the other viel-less Agrocybe, but I think its the only one lacking a veil that has abundant caulocystidia, giving the stipe a kind of granular look.

From Else Vellinga's article, Agrocybe putaminum can be recognized by "typical yellow-brown Agrocybe colors, the velvety, matte pileus which starts out rather triangular in cross section, and the stipe, which is grooved and completely covered in cystidia, making a floccose-velvety impression, and its strongly bitterish mealy (farinaceous) taste. Microscopically, it is characterized by the big, ellipsoid spores with an apical germ pore, four-spored basidia, abundant lageniform to utriform cheilocystidia and utriform to broadly clavate pleurocystidia, the hymeniform pileipellis with some pileocystidia, the caulocystidia on the stipe resembling the cheilocystidia, and the abundant clamp connections."

Sweet! Thanks that's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks a bunch, what other veil-less species could you name that could be misidentified as A.putaminum if you don't mind me asking?
Wow! Thanks for the specifics winters. all of the above has been noted, thanks again!

This is my collection that I've called A. putaminum given habitat and description above, you can see the grooved and velvety stipe if you view it full size:
and the utriform cystidia:

Safe as in you most likely won't die and the effects probably won't be long lasting

And if you report what happened you can make some valuable contributions to what we know about the edibility of a species (if you've ID'd it correctly) because alot of the time, this information is lacking.

I should say that I would not advocate eating any unidentified mushroom or any mushroom in which the edibility is unknown or suspect though.

i totally understand that how much should i consume to accurately be able to declare it as an edible?
next time i come across some ill take a bunch of photos so everyone can know it is the correct species and ill cook and eat an appropriate amount and report back 48 hours afterwards

Most books say that unknown Agrocybe species can be toxic, but I don't really believe them and I think its safe.

Well, my only concern is the bitter taste of putaminum that other agrocybes don't have. Non the less I'm sure it won't kill me. But once again, does anyone have a reccomendation on how much I should consume to accurately be able to experience the effects? Or should I perform several tests? Starting verry small and progressing to a higher and higher amount?

You should indeed start with a small amount and work your way up.

this doesnt happen to be what were looking for does it? found it in a customers landscaping at work today
caps cracking in every direction,
growing from woodchips, stem tapered towards base, no ring or veil however cap has veil remenants on edges, grew in a cluster with a few solitary fruits scattered around it.
smells like cucumbers,
