TEK - Make Your Own Spore Syringes - Guaranteed* Clean Every Time (*Hyperbole) 6

I just wrote out the following as a reply to somebody else's thread, as it's the way I've been making spore syringes for awhile, and felt it deserved it's own thread, so here it is.
Printing directly into water is the only way I'll take prints that I plan on making syringes with. I was going to write up a tek thread explaining how I do it, but I never got around to it. So you'll be the first to see this. Keep in mind, this isn't "theory" I'm talking here, but literally the way I've made countless syringes, not one of which has ever been contaminated.
All pictures below can be clicked on to be made larger.
Things you'll need: Paperclip Any mason jar (wide or regular mouth, but the opening must be large enough to fit the mushroom cap you plan on printing into it, as if you were going to take the print on bottom of the jar. There must be about 1cm clearance on all sides of the cap between the cap and sides of the jar if you were to put the cap into the jar gills down.) Aluminum Foil Pressure Cooker Scissors
Step 1: Bend the paper clip so it looks like this:

Step 2: Place the paper clip you just bent to make look like the image above onto the bottom side of the lid to the mason jar you'll be using. Make sure the "hook" is centered as perfectly in the center of the lid as possible. PLEASE NOTE: You shouldn't use a lid that has holes drilled in it. That was just the only lid that was handy when the pictures were taken.
Step 3: Take a sheet of aluminum foil that is large enough to cover the entire lid to the jar with about an inch extra on all sides, center it over the lid, and then push down so the "hook" of the paper clip pushes through the aluminum foil. The wrap the lid tightly with the aluminum foil, folding the excess of the top of the lid. When you're done, it should look like this:

If you were to then close up the jar right then and there, your end result should look like this:

You'll have to make sure that there is a pretty large distance between the end of the hook, and the bottom of the jar. Enough space to accommodate 40mls of water or so, and then still have a half an inch clearance between the water surface and where the cap will be "hanging" above the water.
Step 4: Put 40mls or so of water into the jar (or however many mls you've got room for and plan on making syringes with. I prefer 40mls, seems to make very nice dark syringes, and is easy to handle. Assemble the whole jar as normal (now you'll have the jar sealed with the hook and water inside as the picture above shows). Pressure cook the whole apparatus for 20 minutes at 15psi. Let it cool overnight.
Step 5: Prepare your glovebox/flowhood. Place the jar you PC'd into the glove box, open the jar and keep just the lid in your dominant hand so the "hook" is ready to hook something and have a pair of scissors in your other hand.
Step 6: Now walk to wherever you're mushies are growing, and hold the "hook" above the UNPICKED/UNHARVESTED mushroom cap that you plan on printing...this cap should still be attached to the mushroom and that mushroom should still be attached to the substrate. Center the hook above the cap. Push the hook into the cap so you can estimate that it is now level with the bottom side of the mushroom cap (level with the gills). Rotate the lid a quarter turn in any direction, then pull up GENTLY just a touch...we're talking a millimeter. This will secure the cap onto the hook of the paperclip.
Step 7: Using the scissors, clip the stipe of the mushroom as close to the gills as you can, without touching the gills with the scissors (or cutting your paperclip).
Now you should be left with the cap of the mushroom that you haven't touched on the end of the paperclip, centered best as you could manage.
Step 8: Walk back to your glovebox, and assemble the whole jar again. Do this CAREFULLY so as to not splash any water up onto the cap or the lid. The water in the jar should never at any point touch the mushroom cap.
Now you can disassemble your glovebox, and you're free to place that jar wherever you want for a day or two (or three or four) while it drops its spores into the water. It's completely sealed, so you could put the damn thing in a litterbox and your sporewater would come out clean.
When ready, put apparatus back into your glovebox/flowhood area, and suck up the spore water into sterilized syringes.
Something to Note:I highly suggest that you have a stir plate and stir bar when doing this. The reason being is the spores aren't heavy enough to break the surface tension of the water when they fall on it. What ends up happening is they lay on top of the water and they look just as if you printed it on a piece of paper. You can even see the gill outlines and everything in the pattern they leave on top of the water as they fall onto it. When you go to stir it up, the print ends up in "flakes". Note, I didn't say chunks, but flakes...very difficult to suck up into the syringe. If you don't have a stir plate and don't want to make one using a computer fan a couple magnets, you could probably get away with GENTLY swirling the jar whenever you think of it, but only if you're absolutely sure to NOT get any water up onto the cap. EDIT: You can also use this tek to make spore prints. Simply leave out the water, and cut a piece of aluminum foil into a circle that fits "snugly" at the bottom of the jar. The spores will deposit (quite nicely might I add) onto the aluminum foil at the bottom of the jar. Then you can simply fold up the foil and put it in a ziplock back or elsewhere.

How about using some lube in the water to break up surface tension, or prevent clumping / flaking, would that work? I guess any kind of detergent is out of the question...

Not sure to be honest, it's worth a shot.
I know it seems counter intuitive, but when they all land on the surface of the water, they manage to basically dry themselves into one giant spore print flake, so if you can do something to prevent that without the use of a stir plate, it's definitely worth experimenting. Don't get me wrong, it still works out even if they do all land on the surface and form the giant "spore flake", but you don't have that nice, pretty, & even spore distribution you want to see in a syringe.
Ever since the first time I did this and discovered that's what happened, I've just always done them using a stir plate. The final product using a stir plate is a nice spore distribution throughout the water without any of the giant "flakes" of spores in the syringe.

Thanks
And yeah, using RTV is definitely a good idea, particularly if you plan on doing it a lot. I just showed the aluminum foil method because basically everybody has the supplies to do it that way, and it doesn't permanently make that lid only useful for one thing.

Cool.... but sounds like more work then printing and scrapping to make MS syringes. And maybe a waste of spores....

Tough crowd eh?
Was just sharing how I do things, and while no, nothing can ever be 100% clean, I'm confident that if put through many trials, this method against printing to something and then transferring spores from that something to water and then from that water to a syringe that this method would win hands down.

Just wanted to drop a thanks and let you know this tek works so perfectly. I modded the mushroom cap hook a little, but the tek itself is flawless. Thanks a ton for writing this up. + 4u
