Trig help. Simplifying fraction with radicals.
    #16042046 - 04/04/12 08:17 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

The fraction is:

(1-(sqrt3)/3) /  (1+(sqrt3)/3)

The correct answer is 2-(sqrt3)  I just have no idea how that was obtained.

[-1 + (sqrt3 / 3)] / [1 - (-1) x (sqrt3 / 3)]
= [-1 + (sqrt(3) / 3)] / [1 + (sqrt(3) / 3)]
= 3[-1 + (sqrt(3) / 3)] / 3[1 + (sqrt(3) / 3)]
= [-3 + sqrt(3)] / [3 + sqrt(3)]
= [-3 + sqrt(3)][sqrt(3) - 3)] / [sqrt(3) + 3][sqrt(3) - 3]
= [(sqrt(3) - 3)(sqrt(3) - 3)] / [sqrt(3)^2 + 3sqrt(3) - 3sqrt(3) - 9]
= [(sqrt(3))^2 - 3sqrt(3) - 3sqrt(3) + (-3)^2] / [3 - 9]
= [3 - 6sqrt(3) + 9] / -6
= [12 - 6sqrt(3)] / -6
= (12 / -6) + (-6sqrt(3) / -6)
= -2 + sqrt(3)

Haha, thanks man.  It's early and I didn't think I'd get a response so quick.
