are you looking for an acoustic or electric guitar?
If your looking for an electric guitar, check out rondomusic.com
Their guitars are pretty much an internet secret, because you can only buy them online. They are known to make the best bang for your buck guitars because they cut out the middleman.
At $250 agiles are amazing and come close to competing with a real deal les paul, and blow ephihones right out of the water.
There are cheaper options at around 100-150 with the SX guitars. While they dont have the quality and craftmanship as the agiles, they make excellent beginner guitars for the budget minded learner.
It does take a leap of faith buying a guitar online you cant try, but taking a look at google you will see everyone has nothing but praise for their rondo music purchased guitars.
I am also a huge fan of ibanez.
EDIT-
it appears rondo sells acoustic guitars too, no clue about the quality since I have only handled their electric guitars. Something to think about though.

Re; what guitar to buy.
i have 5 guitars most are $300+ but my favorate guitar is the one i picked up for 15.99 at the trift store. it had a cracked and re-glued headstock but i swear it works fine and sounds and feels better than my $500 seagull.
i would buy a cheap guitar for a beginner, lots of them actually sound really good and once you become more experienced you will have a better idea of what your needs are in an expensive one later.

Just play, develop your sense of pitch while studying the different chords and progression.

learn the difference between full steps and half steps
learn where all the identical notes and octives are on the fretboard.
it took me ten years to really intuitively learn it.
practice makes better.
try to practice scales and modes and dont just play tabs.
tabs are good practice, but playing scales and chords over and over all over the fretboard i have found makes improvisation and general playing way better.
im actually taking an intro music theory class right now! its only week 2 so were barely scratching the surface but im real excited to simultaneously delve deeper into both of these musical branches! (theory and playing that is)
im a pretty theoretical person by nature so i cant wait until i actually have a better grasp of how music is really made and the 'why' behind it all
i also started teaching myself a lil bit of piano a few months ago (and how to read basic sheet music) so im hoping the music theory class will help me improve on that too
and yeah actually just yesterday i saw a pic on one of the sites somebody here posted explaining where the individual notes correspond on the guitar and it all made so much more sense, just the way you start with the string name and then just go down the fretboard for the next note (and of course remembering that B to C and E to F are the natural semitones! )
this is just too much fun!

Also freekin sing mang!
i cant tell you how good it feels to just sing and play your heart out.
the secret to singing is to erase all of your hesitation and get into "the zone." almost like a musical trance where your voice almost sings unconciously.
just throw aside your concious mind and let your voice flow and get lost in the music, your voice and the music will become one.
learning to throw aside your hesitation and just do it and flow was an amazing general self empowering life lesson for me.
i used to be terrified of singing because i though i would sound bad, but it turns out, that very phantom thought haunting my mind was what was holding me back and the cause of my voice sounding bad!

major/minor modes. arpeggios, open arpeggios. work on different flat picking styles, hybrid picking.
I play a fender strat plus USA 1988 through an Orange Tiny Terror. I also play nylon. Mostly wedding stuff.

most tabs suck. wrong hand positions. I hate them. Use your ear. Install band in a box or something like it and get used to jamming.

Oh yeah! a metronome or jam box thing is a good idea.
i personally like to practice by playing along with the radio.
i can now quickly discover and play in key, plus i learn discover songs.
i just shift all the modes/scale as a whole over one fret at a time until it fits.
a capo would be good... i should get one for that.

Chet Atkins is one of my favorites. I don't really like the Nashville sound he created, but the technique. I listen to everything from funk to metal, and I like to incorporate all of those styles into my playing. I love jamming stevie wonder tunes and throwing in a few bars of viscous tap sweeping metal licks.
