I am a novice to mycology but I have read through, and wrote about, this article for a college class and found it to be thorough. Im sure some of you will be interested to read it. http://aem.asm.org/content/77/17/6076.full

Also, Paul Stamets did a project with Battelle laboratories testing different bacteria and treatments to piles of petroleum filed soil. Skip to 8:00 to see his results, which are pretty impressive.

Anyways thats my 2cents.

Brilliant!  As far as using it to break down land fields it could also be a good place to plant trees to take care of a co2 problem.  But ok agree.  It is a lot better then methane gas!  It might just make it smell better as we drive by them damn things. Not to mention a possible good byproduct.  Who/what school found it in amazon??  Im sure there are free spores or live cultures for research.  It just a matter of getting a hold of the right person.

Search for culture libraries that possess the fungus and contact them directly, if people gave me money I could probably acquire it and make cultures to send to people etc

Maybe we should make this an exotic culture co-op buy. I am sure people would be interested in that. I know I am.

I am able to contact the lab through a friend for interested parties. Additionally, p. microspora frequently undergoes horizontal gene transfer so it may be an ideal organism for genetic manipulation/transformation etc

Can you find out what prices they are asking?

Edit: overlooked it. $300 right?

Can you elaborate on what this concept is?

Horizontal gene transfer

If you consider a bacteria (named A) carrying a F plasmid confering the resistance to an antibiotic.

If you transplant this bacteria onto a petri dish containing non resistant bacterias (named B). A small proportion of the bacterias B will become immune to the antibiotic from the transfer of the plasmid by the bacterias A.

Note: Its only one of the methods that the bacterias use to do it and they must have the right apparatus (F plasmid?) to make it happen that way.

I dont remember all the other ways to do it but some bacterias can also integer parts of DNA that result of lysed bacterias.

Then it should be voted the mushroom of the year!!! I retire all my previous concerns over this organism.

I look forward in seeing its sequence

Yes, it's 300 USD equivalent in pounds. And you guys should read the Yale article on it, it's quite an interesting fungus. The genome has yet to be sequenced but what with sequencing prices falling it may only be a matter of time.... well I can always dream
