Bear in mind that European Ganoderma resinaceum is a separate species or group of species from North American resinaceum. Depending on where the strains originate they may behave quite differently. Our North American varieties seem to perform very fast, many of the cultures I have isolated colonize the agar in about a weeks time more or less. I have not worked with the European variety yet, but according to literature the mycelium is also fast. It also seems very contamination resistant, the one in my signature grew on bacterial infected grain with no problems, aside from a reduction in speed.

One inch horizontal. This one is from Aloha. I collect a lot here in Southern California too. I plan on doing ITS region sequences (almost have everything I need in my lab for this) soon for them. We have quite a lot of diversity when it comes to Ganoderma here. They grow on everything including cacti.

I am interested in Southern California specimens. Do you notice that they tend to have zonations in their context? I am specifically talking about red/orange laccate species on predominantly hardwood.

I am currently helping to collect Ganoderma samples for sequencing, we have collected 29 North American Ganoderma resinaceum cultures, only 1 is from California, all others are east of the Rockies. The California specimens are of interest to me because I have noticed slight morphological differences from the Eastern variant. And there is a single sequence I found from the Unite database labeled as "G.lucidum" from California. It forms a separate branch very close to the Eastern G.'resinaceum' when I build a tree out of the sequences using Geneious software.

I have suspected for a while that the California variety was a separate species due to the way its growth differs. It tends to be thicker and smoother, the eastern variant tends to be thin and somewhat wrinkled. The color of the California specimens seems to be often orange more than red. In the early 1900s a Ganoderma was found on the Stanford University campus in the area that is now Searsville lake. It was described by Murrill (1908) as a new species, Ganoderma polychromum. I think this is the identity of the California Ganoderma. I need more samples for comparison.

Reddit user /u/KnotHeadToo has kindly donated Shiitake Liquid Culture, which I received today. Users who have donated over $50 will have the choice of either Shiitake, or another yet to be determined culture. I am trying to find Enoki LC, if anyone has any they are willing to donate, :pm:

Reward cultures have been shipped from Germany! Donors should expect the reward culture they've selected within the next month or so.

ETA 2 weeks.

Just knocked up a few jars of Shiitake LC with the syringe donated to me, still need one other choice LC to offer up, please :pm: if you can offer something!

Ordering the Pestalotiopsis microspora very shortly with my personal funds since IGG won't give me access to them until the end of December! Stay tuned.

Thanks everyone!

Placing the Pestalotiopsis order (with my own funds) as soon as my CC payment clears. The funds from Indie Go Go won't hit my bank until halfway through January - who wants to wait that long?

Not I!

Should be ordered any day now - paid my CC off last night. Will update!

Hey guys

I was looking into this about a year ago, with every intention of doing agar work and breeding with this fungus
I got pretty derailed in my efforts, but I have continued to think about getting this project in gear.

I just found this thread, somehow, and I am very pleased to see that it is alive and kicking. I'd like to get involved somehow if I can, specifically once the culture is available I would like to get some to work with. I will give cash or trade or just good vibes

what is the current status of things? I did try to read the whole thread but I will have to go back and finish the last few pages later.. its been a doozy

My brother goes to Yale. I have asked him to try and hook up with Scott Strobel there, idk though he isn't in that dept. and he's also kinda timid so I might have a hard time getting his help haha... maybe I'll try to put the pressure on his at xmas..

Credit card payment cleared the bank this morning.

Standby for updates!

:mushroom2:

PS Aktar, you can get a piece of the pie for sure. I'll :pm: you

Spoke with Lipa - we're going to do this the super secret squirrel way.

No details til it's been ordered and shipped. Don't want to compromise the mission before it starts.

We will be shipping to all international donors!

Just might take a little longer to get there!

It has been 18 days since the user who said he ran a culture bank in Germany has sent the other, bonus reward cultures.

I am having doubts here....I'm not sure what I'll do if he didn't pull through, short of purchasing all of the cultures from my own pocket. He asked to remain anonymous, I'll honor that for now.

Not feeling good about that......

I'll get my pitchfork sharpened -

International shipping can sometimes take a very long time, especially with Germany, not sure whats up with that.

I hope it is just a case of taking forever.

I wish he would have provided tracking information at the least...

He hasn't exactly been as convincing throughout the process as I'd like but hey, he's offered to donate and we're taking his word for it for now. Even a message from him in response to my messages would have been great though....

This hobby has taught me patience, but if after 21 days my jars show no activity I toss em and begin anew. If I don't hear anything within the next 3 days, I'll assume he's abandoned ship and is hiding because he is embarrassed.
