Liberty Caps In New South Wales and Victoria
    #1602875 - 06/02/03 08:55 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

So, people down under are out in the pastures. They are collecting Psilocybe cubensis and Copelandia cyanescens. They are looking in manure for these magic shrooms. And all of the time they are most likely walking right past Psilocybe semilanceata, the liberty cap shroom which is hiding in the tall rank grass and/or around clumps of sedge grasses and other wild greasses in the fields.

I know they are there. I picked some myself in the 1980s. So what gives. Very few hardly ever report picking the worlds most special mushroom in Australia and that is the liberty cap.

Now that is interesting MJ, as ive spoken to a number of people regarding Ps.Semilanceata and it has only ever been confirmed and reported in areas of considerable altitude (Mount Buffalo National Park, Victoria and Mount Field Tasmania). Reports that I found on the internet of a young girl in St.Albans, Melbourne who had an accidental injestion of what was described as Semilanceata are doubtful, but you never know i suppose.
A professor (Ferret you might know this guy) in Botany told me that you will not find Semilanceata in areas below 300 above sea level in Australia.
Please pm me with a location so we can check this out MJ.
Come on MJ - Victorians looking for cubensis?? Maybe in people's rooms??
You did recently post that Semilanceata was reported in Auckland, New Zealand, and after examining texts by Buchanan and Guzman, I can only find it found in New Zealand again at altitude in the South Island - and I HAVE picked it in the South Island of New Zealand (where I had my first mushroom experience)
As for dumb Australians - we are because we give americans visas sometimes because they wish to visit a state that isnt draconian.
The US holds more of it citizens in jail than the amounnt held by the rest of the first world combined, and has a ratio of sentencing to death 10% innocent people.

Okay, I was going to say... how the hell would Liberty caps and cubensis/Copelandia cyanescens be growing in the same field at the same time... !!!

The same way P. stuntzii, P. fimetaria, P. sierrae, P. strictipes and P. baeocystis can all be found in the same field at the same time. Although I usually only find two or three of them in a given field and never a lot in quatity.

The same way P. cyanescens and P. cyanofibrilosa and/or P. azurescens can be in the same mulched garden at the same time. And allthree can cross over and appear in grassy areas from muclh beds at the same time.

The same way P. cubensis and Copelandia cyanescens can be in the same field at the same time.

To begin with, the liberty cap does not grow from manure. It grows in manured soil attached to the roots of wild grasses.

And here is a picture of P. cyanescens side by side with P. azuresens.

can you see the difference between the azurescens and the cyanescens in both images.

Stijve and I have even collected two different species of Copelandia in one cow pie before and that si easy for them to be together.

In Thailand I have picked Copelandia cyanescens, Psilocybe cubensis and Psilocybe samuiensis, Panaeolius antillarum and large Lepiotas as well as some species of Stropharia at the same time in the same fieldi in the same rice padies, which is evident on the video clip at the Hawkseye websirte of me shrooming in Thailand in 2001.

HEre is my hand holding one Copelandia cyanescens, one Psilocybe coprophila and several panaeolus sphinctriunuus. They were found in a single cowpie.

Well, that makes sense... about cyanescens and azurescens...Same with Stunzii and the other cold weather mushroooms...but, I was asking why/how could liberty caps and Ps. cubensis be growing in the same field at the same time. One is a cold weather mushroom and one is a warm one... I just wanted to verify this.

P. cubensis and Copelandia cyanescens can grow at high altitudes where the weather is a bit colder. I have picked Copelandias on maui at the 3200 meter lever but have also seen them a five thousand feet up the mountain. Liberty caps are commonin Peru at very high altitudes.

Even in Austrralia you can find them in a higher climate and still find cubes and blue meanies.

While P. samuiensis is close to P. mexicana, a pasture mushroom, it is also related to a liberty cap mushroom and they grow side byu side in Thailand.

I just found apicture of the two and now i cannot find it again in my files.. I will post it later.

P.s.

Liberty caps also grow in warmer weaher in Pune, India.

mj

Regarding P. stuntzii, it is also a spring and summer mushroom in warmer weather and int he late falla cold weather mushroms growin in mulch towards the winter months. My first picking of P. stuntzii was on the lawn of the art museum at Volunteer park on July 2, 1974. A very hot day in Seattle.
