Hunting in Ohio
    #1591918 - 05/30/03 12:30 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

I have been hunting for about a month or so in Ohio. I haven't had any luck so far. I have been looking in cow dung and horse, where there is alot in pastures. I have found inkys and something identified as agrocybes. Can anyone give me any good information on why I'm not finding and psychoactive mushrooms in the dung. Am I going at the wrong time? I have heard they can be found pretty heavily?

It has been a fairly cold spring thus far.

I am not sure if that has anything to do with it, though.

ya herd wrong. No dung lovers in this state. Ohio is pretty barren for psychoactives.

Your best bet is Pan subbs although i have not foudn a single one(millions of foenescci tho).

I believe you want to be looking for pann subbs in areas where decomposing hay/straw type stuff is (stables and anywhere they would keep piles of this stuff). Rumor has it they also grow in well fertalized laws but ill ive seen in lawns is foenescci? At one point almost every single if not every lawn in this neighborhood had foenesecci(sp??) growing on it. If thats a good sign subbs would be growing in the same weather conditions i dunno.

My post seams pointless for some reason i dunno im really stoned. I havent been hunting for a while since i dont trip anymore. I just take pictures of fungus when i happebn to come across it.

Try your luck in "woods" that have not been disturbed. The best places will be infested with mosquitoes due to the moisture, and will have a thick coniferous/decidious leaf covering. I found about 10 different species of mushrooms in a very small section of wilderness. "Psychoactive" species do grow in Ohio, but the season seems to be fall, not late spring or early summer. Any of you guys up for a group hunt? This newbie could use some direction! Farmer

No! Looking in the woods right now would be nothing but a huge waste of time and effort. The only psychoactive mushrooms that grow in Ohio are Panaeolus subbalteatus, a few types of Gymnopilius, and Psilocybe caerulipes.

Gyms and Ps. caerulipes do both grow in the woods. Gyms won't be fruiting till late August, they're a fall mushroom. Looking for Psilocybe caerulipes is pretty much a lost cause-- they've very rare. It is said that they grow in the woods near streams. I've also heard mjshroomer say they can be found in gardens or something along those lines, but in my opinon, spending your time looking for P. caerulipes is a big waste of time.

Look for Pan subbs in horse fields, and big mounds of horse dung. You can also check grass clipping piles and well fertilized yards.

P. caerulipes ohas been collected in Gardens in Cincinnati, Ohio on several ocassions.

It is a wood chip lover and is more likely to be found in man made gardens then in the woods.

Sencond, while P. subbalteatus is comon in rotted composting hay, one has to think if Ohio is a straw state with laege compost heaps or dairy farms or places which automatically have large haystacks from crops grown in OHIO.

Well i feel the need to post this. I happened to be walking into my girlfriends house, and noticed in there garden (woodchip area) these mushrooms. They had a orange sort of colored cap, with a nipple. they looked a lot like p. subs from australia but they obviously werent, could it be possible they were these caerulipes?
