It's only been a major at Appalachian State for 2 years. Before that it was known as "leisure studies" under the category of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science. I'm so glad I found that major though. I can't imagine how drab my existence would be now If i'd stuck with sociology as a major.
Ah very cool. The new name for it definitely sounds a lot better too! hahaha. And yeah, I was thinking a sociology major too, or anthropology. But I didn't really see any job future in anthropology. I think I'll have a reasonable amount of job prospects with this major/field.
Don't go the sociology route man. It sucked, at least at ASU. The professors were all militant feminists and I basically got flamed every day BY MY TEACHERS for presenting very reasonable arguments that were not at all sexist like theirs were.

Oh, I'm not. I am majoring in Environmental Studies at Rowan Uni. in New Jersey come September. Rutgers was also a choice but it might have been a bit too big for my liking.

I just got a permit for my first ever BWCA trip. Going into EP 6 - Slim Lake right by Ely in August. I'm crazy excited. Never done more than a day trip in a canoe. I have a little hiking/backpacking experience, but we'll see how this goes. Going with two of my friends. I'll probably have some questions for you Guru if you don't mind.

Perfect timing. I just got back to civilization 6 hours ago! I know the waters well at this point. Just take time to learn how to read the maps with the shorreline.

No time for questions. I am leaving for Duluth in an hour, then spending Sunday on the North Shore and getting to Ely and then going in Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and out on Thursday. I'm super excited. I'll have to let you know how it goes.

thats where i went back in May. too bad i didn't see this until now. we spent 6 days there. i could have told you where the good fishing holes are and the best campsites. anyways, slim lake was fun. not too many people go there because you're limited to how far you can go but it was a lot of fun and we didn't see another soul for six days!

What kind of things will you be doing? The boreal forests and northern hardwood forests will be a big change from the NC mountains - you will love it.
I'm going to be taking clients on canoeing expeditions for 7-10 days at a time through the Boy Scouts of America. I'll live on their base which is on Moose Lake just a short drive from Ely. I did a 10 day expedition back in 07' and have wanted to go back ever since.
fuck you man. fuck you.
jk, im just jealous... i hate my life in the city. congrats.
I've done the Boundry Waters as I used to live in Michigan. Not many better places to be but the bugs can be pretty bad at times. We got lucky on our two weeks as there was almost no bugs and it was late spring. Fishing was awesome.

I caught a 7lb smallmouth on a bright red minnow plug I was trolling for pike. We took lots of pike on jigs (when fishing for walleye) and top water plugs in the cove shallows. So much fun in shallow water. We ate the walleye which we caught in droves. Saw some awesome giant male moose in the shallows with lake weeds draped over their antlers. What a wonderland. You could spend a summer there and barely touch it.

You could spend a summer there and barely touch it. Ain't that the truth. It's what some would call God's country. I prefer to call it wilderness. And yeah, the Walleye are superb eating.

Seriously? That's super strange. It is a beautiful place. Wow. I had such a great time. We caught a 3-inch bass off the shore of the Northern most site at Slim (stayed there all 3 nights), day trekked to other places. Hiked on the south end of Slim, checked out all the other campsites except the middle site on Slim. Had hardly any bugs and a cool storm on our last day. What an amazing time. Can't wait to go back.
