Using Pint Jars with 1/2 Pint Recipes
    #4169057 - 05/13/05 12:17 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I've been thinking about this a lot lately and wanted to get the shroomery community's opinion on this.

I'm growing shrooms for the first time using the modified PF-Tek. I recently bought some Kerr 1 pint jars because that's all I could find. I was thinking that if I used the receipe for 1/2 pint jars for the substrate cakes and then filled the jars with vermiculite wouldn't I have normal incubation grow times with twice the normal protection against outside germs because of the double amount of Vermiculite covering the mixture? Or am I wrong?

Get back to me.

Thanks

I did my pf jars using the calculator on this page;

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7919/pag/2

The calculator is for half pint jars so the recipe for 2 half-pint jars will (almost) fill up 1 pint jar, I make just a little more than needed. Better have a little left over than being a little short!

just make up enough shit for 24 1/2 pints witch will give you enough for 12 pints. Follow the directions. Make sure the jars are wide mouth. Wipe down the top 1/2 of glass and keep it clean, fill with verm.

Well see I'm concerned about grow time and contamination so I might try it this way in order to see if I can't speed up the process and better protect my spores. I mean is there any negatives to maybe trying this method? If there is I'll gladly go the normal route and fill my jars with enough substrate for a 1 pint jar but I just wonder if it isn't easier and more safe to go with a 1/2 pint of substrate and fill the jar with vermiculite.

if it doesnt contam in the firs 2 weeks it shouldnt contam at all. Colonization times will double

Are colonization times based on how big the jars are or how much substrate there is in the jar?

I don't think you're understanding what I'm asking.

Through research my understanding is that by using a pint jar your colonization times will increase anywhere from four days to two weeks over using a normal 1/2 pint jar. Also I understand that chance for contamination can double.

So if I take a pint jar, use a receipe for substrate for a 1/2 pint jar. Put a 1/2 pint worth of substrate into a pint jar. Then on top of the substrate I fill the jar with vermiculite to prevent contamination, wouldn't I help increase protection from contamination and at the same time speed up the colonization process over normal 1 pint standards?

Everything doubles. Substrate ratios, colonization times, etc. Contam probs shouldn't if you were sterile enough. Just double all the ratios for what the 1/2 pint jars call for, you will be glad you did because you will probably get a bigger yield.....

I see what you are saying..less substrate equals faster colonization time. True. BUT CONSIDER THIS..How are you going to inoculate the 1 pint jars with 1/2 pint substrate?? If you are using a spore syringe, the needle won't go in far enough to get through all that vermiculite and reach the substrate.

I realize this is an old thread, but I'm going to be conducting some experiments with a 1/2 pint jar.  The concept will be the same, but based around the premise that if you have self healing ports you don't need a layer of verm.  I'm considering putting the verm below it as a base (thus allowing me to have less volume for faster colonization).  I'm planning on using the small 1/4 pint of brf cake to make some liquid mycelium for some grain jars.

-150ml of dry verm as Base

Pf Tek (2:1:1)
-4 Tbsp of verm (60 ml)
-1/8th tea spoon of gypsum (0.6 ml)
-2 Tbsp of diluted coffee water (30 ml)

Coffee is diluted at 1:4

Mix it all up than add your

-2 Tbsp of Brown Rice Flour

Voila.

I'll keep you guys posted on how this goes.

I'm interested in this as well. A lot of unused 1 pt jars are kept out of commission simply because there is no widely accepted tek. I do have a question tho...how will you know when its fully colonized, like on the bottom of the substrate? Would you just give it 2 weeks from the time it colonizes around the glass or....?

Since I won't be birthing the cake I'm going to just give it a week after it colonizes around the glass.  It's one of those thin 1/2 pint jars, so I think it'll be fine.

For curiosity's sake.  This is the destiny of the cake.
