Ive decided to try out backpacking. Got a trip planned with some of my college mates. good times should be had. Gonna rent some gear but Im curious
HOw much should a tent, backpack, sleeping bag, stove, etc. all cost me. Is it smart to buy entry level stuff, or should i pay a couple hundred more and get quality shit

There is a wide range of prices when it comes to these items.
If I were you I would go middle of the road.
Now since you are going with friends there may be no need to purchase everything. Some of your friends may already have a stove or water filter etc. There is no need for everyone to be carrying the same items that can be used by all.
Rough estimate on middle of the road tent, sleeping bag, backpack, camel back, sleeping pad. At least 500.
I would recommend getting some used ski poles to use as trekking poles. They help tremendously.

I'd say it depends whether you plan on going backpacking again in the future. Good quality gear is well worth it, but not unless you are going to use it. Like hawks said, since you are going with friends you probably don't need to worry about everything.
You could go to walmart and get a $40 tent and $20 sleeping bag. But that tent will not last you longer than a few trips, if that. I always pay the $$ for the higher quality gear, because it lasts for many many years and I get plenty of use out of it
Cheap gear is fine if you just plan on going once or twice with some friends. I wouldn't recommend it for long term use

Better gear is lighter weight as well. You can also just tarp camp it. It's super easy and all you have to buy is a couple of small tarps and some P-Cord, which I recommend getting anyways.

Well i have started to get some gear. Bought a jetboil stove (my dad used to be a backpacking guide in Yosemite and he loved his). Bought a 1 person tent with GREAT reviews on amazon for $140, and got a down sleeping bag for a decent price only $100
Luckily i saved a bunch of cash with the rewards points from my credit card that I used for Amazon money, but still need a backpack, a air mat, and other miscellaneous shit I plan to get into the activity to escape the fiance and kid every now and then gotta clear out the mental poison and what not ya know.
Plus im in the fucking PNW. Might as well go fucking backpack the redwoods while im in college. Ill post some pictures of my soon to be adventures. I got a trip comming up next weekend, ill fill ya all in and review my gear too.

Seems like you are on the right path. And that maybe you want to keep doing this, which I think you will. This shit is addicting.
Definitely get some used ski pole and cut the baskets off the bottom of them. I backpacked for years without poles, and once I used them I decided I will never go back. They help so much with technical portions of trails and keeping your balance.
Shoot questions at us when you have/think of them!
If you are in the PNW I'm always looking for back packing buddies. I live in the Portland area, and there are a lot of places nearby to go backpacking.
Where are you at? I'm always looking for some new people to go on adventures with in the woods/wilderness. I'll even bring the Kind
