When you get a very fresh you specimen, put a little water on the cap and print it with a jar over it. In twelve hours when you lift it you will see why they are called purple brown. If you still can't see the purple after this, when you pick some fresh and one has spored all over the top of another, wet the tip of your finger and rub it in the spores, then look at the color on your finger. If you still can't see the purplish tint after that, maybe there is a strain variance, or perhaps you can't see as well as you think.

They are pretty much choclate brown when they are more dry, but all the one's I've found do look purplish when fresh.

Went exploring to a couple different creeks yesterday and came away with some new insights on best habitats and other ideas... but, more on that later. For now, just a couple pics of ovoids hanging onto steep creek embankments:

From above, some of these looked like smooth stones. This creek was tiny; probably only semi-permanent.

In general, the season is still going strong. Despite a string of hot days (87-91 degrees), still finding good looking fruits and new pins!

Now for something completely different. A big sycamore. A big pluteus. A big orange thing. And a pretty habitat - just not for ovoids:

That sycamore is awesome :drooling:

Deer. :shakefist:

I saw one growing in a debris pile for the first time today. I also noticed that plants had started growing in the debris around the same time, they must need similar temps.

Interesting. The first three pics don't look like the ovoids we have on the east coast, but they are clearly bluing. The fourth pic looks like what I'm used to. Are west coasters that different? The gills seem way too light, never seen the caps dimpled like that, and some of those stems are massive.

Hadn't been out a few days since it hasn't rained much, and was nervous that things could be winding down. Wrong! Over a pound for two hours worth of work - and work it was, spending most of my time down on ground. It wasn't worth standing up as more often than not, the next pick could be spied from the one i was currently picking.

All of these were found along one side of the creek, a strip about 200 feet long and 30 ft wide. Most were in that first growth of vegetation up from the water, but one was in pure sand right above the waterline and a number were up into the trees in chest high grass. Still not many in debris piles. I left about 25% more than I picked in the field because they were just too chewed up, but I didn't find any that had begun to rot.

A piece of colonized wood I placed on a bed of sand last week. Look at that new myc growth spreading out!

A black rat snake I chased up a dogwood so I wouldn't chop him up with the lawn mower.

I decided to check a stream closer to home today.  Now, I only have to go 2 miles away instead of 10.  Yippie!!!!!

These were growing everywhere.

Total haul for the day (about 45 minutes worth including drive time.... )

Has anyone seen an eastern ovoid so big?

The total haul up closer.

Sorry for no field shots as I didn't bring a camera with me.

I definitely think the soil has a lot to do with them growing or not.  The soil near this stream was more sandy than where I was checking only about 1 mile away.  The difference from zero to what you see above is due to the difference in soil IMO.

Congrats... I think it's the first documented ovoid in the District of Columbia. It may even be the first psilocybe, at least in modern times.

Like I said in my PM, Rock Creek doesn't have much sand and it doesn't have any ovoids. (I'm identifying the creek because people should know not to waste their time. I spent two hours the other day and found none). It is a muddy creek, and it doesn't cut through any rock and therefore doesn't create sand. Like you, I went 2 miles to another creek and the bedrock is close enough to the surface so the creek bottom is rocky and those rocks grind down into lots of sand.

I can't escape the conclusion, which has now been reaffirmed multiple times, that ovoids need sand. Actually, I think they can't thrive in a heavily organic soil and sand acts to dilute the mud and makes the ground much more porous to air and water.

I think the implications are this: you can try to establish ovoids in creeks like rock creek, but it won't last without human intervention. In this area, ovoids exist in massive numbers (it's ridiculous how easy it is and how their numbers dwarf any other species) any place the habitat is right. If they wanted to grow along the Rock Creeks, they would and there's nothing we can do to make it happen.

How do I make a "mushroom observer" observation?  We can now put a pin in DC on the map.

I would look for an existing location for DC in general (there may be locations too specific - like 1600 pennsylvania ave, I think i saw there) and add an observation for p. ovoid..)

Koods.

I now know what you ment about the staining.  After handling those, my fingertips were almost black.  So I can see how the staining could rub off onto another edible or poisonous one.

So be careful people.  Thankfully they aren't that hard to identify.  Are there any that we should look out for though?  As far as I can tell they are pretty easy to distinguish between others as long as you know what to look for?

Finally I found some today. Thank you all esp. Koods for you great info. When I first went out for these it was 6 years ago and it was on a very steep hillside with a creek like 300+yards away. So each time I've been out this year I've been hunting those kind of areas.

I've must of put it 100 hours this season finding nothing but delicious morels. Not Today though, I took your advice and searched a rocky/sandy area of the creek today and found a couple dozen.
Just a couple questions (i'll be adding pics as soon as my camera charges.)

1.I found a nice set of 3 right in the sun they seem VERY dry idk if I should still eat them. What do you think?

2. I know mushroom potency isn't about the size of the cap, and small pins or aborts will get you just as high. but I found tiny baby ovoids about the size of abes head off a dime. I would of left them to get big but its a very popular shroom area (thank to some pigs that busted a bunch of kids there) Would you eat them?

Last but no least 3:. how many ovoids would you consume to reach a level 2-3 trip?

Could of found more but I didn't have any off and I found 3-4 ticks on me and im not having that.

I think the sand is working as a natural mulch bed and humidifier, like vermiculite. West coast finds are usually in mulch or woodchips, not stream banks. Another factor causing them to hang around sand might be the age of this species in the region, it hasn't had enough time to establish itself deeper in the forest where wood doesn't show up as frequently.

I'm still amazed by how their floral fragrance can permeate skin to persist after washing several times with soap and water. I wonder what the evolutionary function of that odor is. It's a great way to ID them when bluing isn't evident in the field.

The purplish color of spore deposits only seems to show up on caps. Spores look dark brown most of the time.

I saw a couple of these with what appear to be conjoined stipes at the cap.

I think sand and wood chips share the property that is important: no matter how hard you compress it, there is always empty space in the mix. Dirt just gets more and more compacted. Ever notice how the areas ovoids really love, the ground is almost springy?
