Nice area and nice habitat but nothing until I was about to get in my car and a voice said, "you can't leave without checking the wood chip bed along the parking lot."

Was this a well "groomed" park? You know, where crews clean things up when nature makes things look messy... Like mulching storm debris. Trying to figure out how mulch gets infused with ovoid myc.

Koots,
It was groomed to the extent that chips were placed there and the chips were likely generated from downed wood in the fall/winter. I searched what I thought was classic ideal habitat about 1/4 mile away but none were there and it was in a ravine that was ~200 feet lower than the area I found them. I guess spores fly and people spread them and I'm not sure how they got there but I'd say human intervention if I had to guess b/c the general region is a known hot spot and I assume least a few of the thousands of college students in the area are mycophiles.

VA.  Came out right on time.  Didn't see the early flush like the ohio river area guys did in the abnormally warm March.

There must be something terribly wrong with my technique. 3 rivers, 4 streams, miles of knotweed, sandy damp wood filled soil, about 40-50hrs hunting and nothing but dryad's, a few little boletes(?) and agrocybe's. I think the ovoids hate me or they don't like these parts :shakefist:

Took me two years to find my first ovoids and I check the same spots now as I did two years ago, just have to wait for them to find you..

Congrats on the finds, MacMerdin, those look beautiful and in perfect health!  What were you doing wrong before?  What's different between where/how you were looking before, and the way koods showed you?

Koods, it was awful nice of you to take him on a real live hunt.

2 things:

1.  I wasn't looking hard enough for them.  Although I was scanning the ground, I was not using a stick to brush away the vegetation.  Also possibly going at it a little too fast.  It's better to take your time and really scan the floodplain ground....they can be tricky at first to see.

2.  I was in the wrong habitat.  Although I was searching flood plains and sand bars etc., the streams and creeks were not as flat as the one we found them at and were a little more fast flowing (no idea if this makes a difference).  Also, the sand bars/flood plains were either too high or too low, too much vegetation or not enough.  Again, I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

All in all, I would say Alan had the best advice if you still can't find them.  Go to that map he posted http://mushroomobserver.org/location/map_locations?q=DbAq

and find the closest pin to you and check around that stream, creek or river.

Yes it was and I will be forever grateful to him for it.

Found this patch a couple weeks back in bark chips with rosebushes. At first I thought they were Stunzii since I did not know ovoids even grew in on the west coast and I am relatively new to hunting, but with the help of the shroomery I found out they were actually the splendid ovoideocystidiata. You may have seen my post before, but I thought I would include it in the official ovoid thread given its corrected identification and newest flush.

First Flush:

Second Flush + new patch:

Third Flush of both patches:

Got about 4oz dry so far and there is still a cornucopia of pins popping up. ... Praise the shroom gods!  :bow2:

We got some good rains in Philly & I found these by a stream.  I think
they're Ovoids, but tell me what you guys think.  I didn't have my
camera on location, they were more caramel colored when I found them.
Spore print was purple brown, and there were a few little greenish
blue spots on the caps and some bluing on the stems.  The ends of the
stems are black where I cut the muddy base off.

You got 'em! Nice too see more people finding them east of the Appalachians! Did you find them in the city proper? I was in Philly last year and was in that park that parallels Germantown ave to the southwest and thought that it looked like a perfect habitat.

Excellent news!  This is the first time I've found actives.  They were
just outside of Philly proper in Delaware county.  There were tons of
wine-cap stropharia not too far off but they turned out to be completely
bug infested when I got home.  I'm glad these turned out to be what I
thought they were after having to throw away 3 pounds of a good edible!

I would edit out the name of the creek.

Ya, I've been finding a lot of wine caps, but they sure don't last long in the field.

Edit is done.  Noob mistake:eek:
I threw the stropharia in with the mulch in our flower bed, supposedly
they're easy to get started that way, maybe if they start to come up
in the yard I'll get to them before the bugs do:grin:
