I experimented with mine while printing.  At first 30-60 minutes the light print was definitely a purple color.  24 hours later and the print looks deep chocolate brown.

Take this info as needed.

TTwak and I discussed the possibility of the spores changing color as they lose moisture upthread. I've noticed that the spores dropped by a bigger mushroom on its neighbors look very purple in the field, but there is no hint (or tint) of purple after they've been drying.

Yeah, you're right.  I remember a couple yesterday had purple spores on them in the field but now they don't have that color anymore.  Interesting.

I've also read them being described as yellow brown by some.

They found me - I looked for them and spent a lot of time in the right types of "natural" habitat in several areas of NJ, NY and Pa habitat and found a few dryads saddle and not much else. My last "hunt" was Friday in SW Pa and searching a ravine with a creek near the Mongahela. Nice area and nice habitat but nothing until I was about to get in my car and a voice said, "you can't leave without checking the wood chip bed along the parking lot." I did and said, wow black dots -WTF? Then I saw the brown + blue - thousands maybe...

Pics aren't great but you'll get the point- it was A bit awhward being on my knees with people sitting in their cars 5 feet away...

The black dots - tons of em - bluing mycelium

Has anyone noticed how persistent the smell of ovoids is? The smell can hang on my fingers even after I've washed my hands.

Yes... It's a very pleasant smell, as well. After a recent hunt, I left the collection in the bag in the back seat while I went to the store. The smell inside the car when I got back was incredible.

As for that questionable ovoid you commented on yesterday, I got a pretty weak print, but enough to compare it side to side with an ovoid print and they were identical in color, so I think it's just a malformed ovoid.

Sorry I was posting hastily (while double-parked) and didn't finish posting the pics with the rest of the story...

The "black dots" were indeed old but they were dry and didn't seem rotten but definitely wouldn't eat them raw (or without solid ID) - however there were about 20 clumps in that condition so I might have examined them more closely and considered the options if there was a need...

But swiping a few leaves and looking a little further revealed brethren a little better

and much much better...

These were the  first few pics before I got spooked about people wondering why I was kneeling in front of their car since the chips were nest to a parking lot. Will try to post more pics but let's just say it was a bountiful pick with pounds left behind. Hopefully they will get some rain before they all become black dots. I had a 350 mile ride ahead of me and wasn't able to go get water etc.

Thanks to all who posted on these from their discovery or at least naming until present. They are certainly very very pleasant but I almost felt sorry for them because they were so "black and blue" until I realized the coloration was not necessarily distress and they were actually ...

Anyway thanks for the info that gave me something to look for and put me in a place where they'd find me.

G :mushroom2:

drying them out with damp rid

I've dried a number of batches this week using two different drying agents, calcium chloride (damp rid) and sodium hydroxide (lye crystals).

I prepare the fresh mushrooms by washing them, placing them on layers of paper towels, and patting excess water off. After letting them air dry until there is no water left on their surface, I load as many as possible into the desiccator - a plastic container about 10 in wide, 20 in long, 6 in tall with a little fan attached to the lid to circulate air.

After comparing the two desiccants, sodium hydroxide wins big time. It took about 15 hours using calcium chloride to turn fully hydrated mushrooms into cracker dry mushrooms. With sodium hydroxide, it took only 6 hours.

The one logistical downside to using lye is I have had to reload before drying is complete, where the damp rid seems to last a lot longer. Of course, lye is also a pretty nasty substance, so you have to be extra careful with it. Right now, I've got a backlog waiting to get dried, so speed is a factor - so the extra hassle of lye is worth it.

I just wanted to edit this to mention with the fan on very low (50 rpm or so), lye is so efficient at removing every trace of water vapor almost immediately, that the mushrooms become frigid due to evaporation.

Was this a well "groomed" park? You know, where crews clean things up when nature makes things look messy... Like mulching storm debris. Trying to figure out how mulch gets infused with ovoid myc.

Good advice.  Odds are really good in areas with lots of reported sightings.  Don't waste your time in areas with little to no reports, and also don't be cheap: drive the extra mileage in order to go where they've already been found to be common.  Study the habitat closely and then attempt to find similar ones nearer to home.

Yes, and while technically legal, it can still be frowned upon in some areas, and draw the wrong kind of attention; I wouldn't put it past some police departments to harass people about it even if it's technically not illegal.  People like to remain lowkey I guess.  People are more likely to only send prints to good trusted friends, and to people who offer things of value for trade and/or provide lots of help and contribution to the forums.

Alan, what's the species in your avatar?  Is it hooshagenii/semperviva?  It's a shame that I can't zoom in on it...it looks like a gorgeous mushroom!

Sending prints isn't necessarily technically legal.  If you know that the print will be used to grow illegal mushrooms, then it is conspiracy to manufacture a controlled substance, a very serious felony.

It is annoying when people ask for prints, then ask the same person for grow advice.

You are right on with that Alan.I almost went to jail getting a cube syringe sent to my home.they said it got sent to the wrong address and the person called the cops because they thought it was drugs,or some shit.I know they were lying to me.Anyway, the cop wanted to come in and search my house, and was totally in the front door, and he called me a liar, and said I know exactly what you planned to do with this, and you're not doing it in my county!

Good thing you didn't admit to what you were planning to do, as that would have given him the statement he needed for a conviction.
